    Auto Leveling Headlights

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, need some guidance on my auto level headlights. Problem is that they don't auto level. I can see that they point up a bit, and it seems like I'm blinding the car in front of me and on coming traffic. The driver side is brighter than the passenger side one. I have tried manually adjusting them but they don't move much. Where would I begin to trouble shoot this. And yes I do have the auto level feature. Thanks guys.

    You need VCDS.

    www.ross-tech.com

This way you can check system and or reset it.

More often its one of the 2 sensors...front or back.

Do you know for certain yoru Audi has the auto-level system installed? Not all B6's came with it...

    Also, check the fuse.

Is there a tell tale sign to tell whether or not the car has auto leveling head lights?

Use VCDS and follow the headlight level adjustment procedure. Daniel Stern Lighting has a good guide on properly aiming the lights. Use both screws for vertical alignment, the outside screw for horizontal.

If it's the lights being dim or different colors, you likely need new bulbs, but that wouldn't fix the aiming issue.

Well. It has the sensors in front and back. I will double check the fuse. Bad thing is I don't have VCDS.

I have a spare set of S4 leveling motors if you need them...note that single xenon's are different though.

If you have auto leveling headlights you will have a front and rear level sensor. The front one is connected to the lower control arm. You should be able to see this by just looking through your wheel.

Here's the rear level sensor connected to the rear lower control arm.

So my understanding of single and bi xenons is that if you use a single bulb for your high and low beams then you have bi-xenons. Is that correct. Or is there a different way of telling them apart. I'm thinking I have the single xenons cause my other bulbs come on when I flick my high beams on. And are the leveling motors inside of the headlight assembly.

Are your current headlights OE/OEM? Have you looked inside them to see if they have motors? Many aftermarket headlights dont come with motors. Also the OE H7 headlights dont come with motors ...

Highly recommend to peek inside your current headlights.

They do have the motors. I looked inside of them a couple weeks ago when I was looking at what type of bulb they had. They have the D1S type bulb. I will post pics of them tomorrow just to make sure.

All US and Canadian Audis with factory HID xenon headlights have auto leveling as required by law.

Bi-Xenon will flip the cut-off shield out of the way when the high beams are on, and also turn on the high beam bulb. Single xenon lights will just turn the high beam bulb on, there is no actuator assembly to move the cut-off shield. The low beam will stay on in either case. It doesn't matter which they are, the alignment procedure will be the same.

So I finally got around to checking the inside of my headlights. Here are a few pics. Do I have the leveling motors. I checked the fuse on the driver side dash. It's good. Is there any other fuse locations or is that it.

yes you have them, i had an issue with my main headlight plug not seated all the way, this caused the dipped light error on my DIS, reseated and cleared the codes, problem went away.
Have you cleared the codes with vagcom?

I don't have a vagcom. But I'm not getting any lights or errors on my cluster. They just don't auto level. They are not dipped either. I do have a fog light bulb that is bad. And my display keeps telling me that. Would that play a part with the headlights.

I don't think it should affect it. When it comes to troubleshooting the xenon system it helps to have access to vagcom, there is a procedure to reset the home position, I don't know if you can even reset home without some form of vagcom.

Also it could be that the headlights didn't slide back into the bottom part of the frame correctly when they were put back into the car (I had that happen to me lights pointed up)

Check the auto level fuse. Also, you won't see auto leveling unless you turn the lights on immediately, as it's done in 5-10 seconds after the car starts.
