    Possible transmission pump malfunction?

    Hello everyone.
I have been going through the forums for months now reading up on all sorts of things related to my 2001 S6 (euro)
Would like to start by thanking you all for the info provided.

I am having issues with my S6.
It is fine right after starting it cold. Once it warms up it looses power, like it has gone in to Limp Mode, and the transmission starts making the worst sound, a high pitch squeal directly related to engine RPM.

A VW mechanic that had a look at it told me that the flex plate had a split in it and was flexing abnormally causing the crank trigger to loose contact resulting in power loss and the horrid sound. I however had a look last night with a boroscope and could not see anything wrong with it. I already have a replacement plate so I had a good idea what to look for.

The transmission has now started to leak transmission fluid out the front so the input seal is shot for sure. That tells me that there could be abnormal movement around the converter.

It is just that there is no RPM fluctuation/slippage and I have not been able to link the vibrations I have found to this issue. So after reading tons of torque converter related posts I have been unable to find symptoms that are like the once my S6 has.

So how would a pump malfunction describe itself?
I know a failure would result in the car going nowhere.
    Have those things been failing?

Have any of you had this happen to your car.

From what my Indy tells me the transmission is in fact a ZF5HP24 transmission. Is that correct? If so it must be good since those are used in so many different types of cars since way back. Part availability must be ok.

    Again thank you.
    Have an awesome day.
    Best wishes from Iceland

The news is not good for you my friend.
I think what you really need to consider is if anyone in your area is capable of repairing that transmission properly. If so, what is the cost?
You need to accept that IF you remove that transmission from the car it must be rebuilt 100%, as good as (or better than) factory. You cannot open that transmission and only fix the part that's broken. If you do that I promise you another part will fail pretty soon and you'll have to start all over.
There is NO such thing as a simple repair with the 5hp24 transmission, it is all or nothing.

If you would like to repair it properly it is going to be expensive, very expensive in your case considering your location. The cheapest thing I can imagine you might consider doing is finding a used transmission and simply swapping it in.
The next option, for common sense, would be a 6 speed manual swap. Ditch the auto all together and don't look back.
Lastly, rebuild your transmission. I would ONLY consider that option if your rebuilder will offer you something like a 1 year/ 12k mile warranty. If not, don't bother.

Beyond that, I really don't know what advice will help you; it sounds very likely that the transmission needs to be removed and ..whether it's the pump or something less, you will be looking at a rebuild.

    Thank you Rollerton.
This car has given me nothing but problems so far.

The transmission will have to come out. I will get a quote from my local transmission shop and look around for a gearbox. I would very much like a manual and if I come to the conclusion that I could do a swap for about the same cost I will not hesitate to do it. It is just that no matter what the cost is, it is always going to be more that this car deserves.

There are not many manual Off-Roads here in Iceland and if I do find one that has been scrapped it is probably going to super expensive getting all the parts I will need. However if I could find a swap kit in the states I can get it shipped over here for a reasonable amount. I had a look at what parts are needed for the swap a while back following our conversation. I guess it is time to find that list and start asking around.

Besides, I can do the swap myself. I doubt I would tackle the transmission rebuild even though I have done plenty of TH350 TH400 transmissions in my days.
