    Brake whistle

Lately my car has been making a crazy loud whistling sound when I'm coming to a stop from slower speeds. I thought it was originally from the cold and the car being cold but it continues to make the whistle even after the car is warmed up and driven. It doesn't always make the sound but it has been more often. Does anyone know what could make this sound? Thank you guys

Not sure what year your car is- but Audi has released a brochure, detailing this noise being normal under certain circumstances. It typically is more pronounced during cold weather- as the Metallic Pads making contact with the rotor under light braking, make a pretty audible "squeal" tone.. My 2015 S4 does it bad, in between washes where the brake dust is heavily coated on the wheels, and caked between the caliper/pads & rotor.. after a good wash, I notice a heavy amount of black residue come off my wheels, then the brake squeal is gone for a little, until the brake dust comes back which is accompanied with the squeal.

If your having a loss of braking quality- that is something else, you may need to go in for Service check-up.

Mine is also a 2015, the brake quality has been the same it is just the noise. I had read it could be from the dust but I had just washed my car and the noise though intermittent still happens

That's what you need. Brake harder. Go up to 60 and slam those puppies on. Don't lock up but a good hard stop. Do that six or seven times and you'll get everything nice and hot and burn all that brake gook off. You'll be golden for a little while after.

I have a '15 S4 and used to get this problem too. I haven't heard the squealing since switching to new rotors and Akebono ceramic pads though.

Completely normal for this car. I've found i had to change breaking habits to mostly make it go away. Never brake lightly at low speeds. Always use moderate pressure and never maintain a constant light pressure. It's just the nature of the stock brakes. I'll deal with it until they need replacement.

I've been getting that a lot lately with the colder temps (seems to whistle/squeal when temps are below 65 degrees F or so) and more rain. I can see the pads have plenty of life left (and I am a gentle braker) so I figured it was with the design. I know the 13 TDI Beetle owners manual states that its common for VW brakes to squeal like that (and the Beetle does do that on occasion), but I haven't looked hard enough in the S4 manual to see if it says the same thing.

I am going to point it out to the service advisor when I go in for the 15k mile service, but based on my research, it appears that this is normal.

Can't gentle brake on this car. Must be firmer with the pedal, luckily it still brakes smoothly that way.
