    Bought a 2004 a8L for $800

So I came across this deal for a 2004 a8L that the previous owner drove the the car 5 miles after it over heated and couldn't get it to start after...

After fixing the coolant hose that caused the overheating I replace plugs, coolant temperature sensor and thermostat in the car and it was able to start

After having the car idle for about 40 minutes it started to misfire and overheat again...so I have to do the head gaskets

That car looks beat up bad. Good luck but it might be better suited as a parts car.

Just sharing the experience from our shop but the cost to replace the engine is usually not far off from replacing head gaskets. Plus it gets you away from all of the unknown history from that engine.

Warped head or block are always concerns on overheated engines.

    All Over!

That car looks like an absolute ruin.

Besides the engine issues, there's the bodywork. Aluminium isn't cheap to work on, then there's the air suspension, which seems to have sagged.

I can see this turning into a money pit, good luck getting it straight.

I am aware you are doing the work your self. Complete engines are cheap enough many times that they are the same cost as just a upper gasket kit for many audi engines. Plus if you have a warped head forget it. It is more cost effective to replace the entire unit. There is no harm is stripping it down and checking it out though. Before you pull the heads pull that water pump off and make sure it is not a plastic impeller that is slipping on the pump shaft causing it to overheat. I have seen it many times in the past.

You got it cheap enough you can always gut it and turn it into a track car if you can find coilovers for it that is. My gutted D2 A8 is a beast on track. We can battle it out on the road course.

Where can I find an engine just incase...and yes I plan on having fun with it, I might do a custom single turbo setup for it just like I am doing on my 2.7t

The suspension is stuck in jack mode at the moment...the PO had all the shocks replaced 5 months ago

If I were you I would do an LS swap into that thing and put coilovers in it and then worry about body work. You will likely spend less or equal to what you are doing anyway but more reliable and fun when you are finished.

Dude LSX swap would be much too difficult. I would just engine swap that and get it running. Those engines are only like $1500

Keep up the good work man!

Make a rat rod style car out of it. slam it, nice wheels, embrace the beat up body..maybe sand some paint off and expose the aluminum in areas....

I would look for another complete car maby somthing smashed in the back with a good engine and nose. There should be another car out there that has all the parts you need to repair yours for a decent price. Just my 02. It is extremely rewarding to fix these cars correctly.
