GDI Carbon Cleaner *What do you think*

I came across this line up while watching Two Guys Garage on T.V. It almost sucked me in knowing how bad our carbon build up is. has anyone had any experience with it? Testimonials?

Link for reference if you don't know what I am talking about.

Our carbon buildup seems to be mostly relegated to the intake valves and intake itself. This product seems designed to clean the injector itself, and will do next to nothing (if not exactly nothing) to clean the valves, since it is introduced into the engine downstream of the valves through the fuel system.

Hard for me to trust car show guys when they exist on ads and product placement. Sure if someone paid them enough, they would nearly anything.

You need the stuff that Dan. Q used in his tutorial. The product made by B&G.

There is no way to remove carbon other than removing that intake manifold and scraping/ blasting it out.

The CRC stuff would be worth a shot, but I think you'd still have to remove the intake and scrape the valves manually. If anything the CRC stuff might just speed things up a little. I just cleaned my valves and soaking them in Seafoam did almost nothing. Carb cleaner was a little better. Brake cleaner worked the fastest, which is to say it hardly worked at all. I want to go in again and try the Amsoil Power Foam I found, but my guess is it hardly works as well. I don't think a spray alone, any product, will clean things in less than probably a hundred repeated applications.

I have a question on this product. Since this CRC material being sprayed into the intake might it function as a port injector and wash over the back of the intake valves. Could this retard the carbon buildup if used every 5-10 k miles? If this product is efficacious could its use extend the period between manual cleaning of the valves?
    Thanks.

I was thinking more in the manner of manually cleaning the valves, then using this product every oil change or something? As a preventative measure? I think I'll clean my valves this weekend, then use this spray and log my results.

HI ibiswhite_2.0. That is exactly what I was thinking. I just cleaned my valves they were totally covered in carbon buildup (2009 A4). I just wonder if using such a product would prolong the time between manual valve cleaning.

If I was you, I would pick up a can of it and use it. Then in 10k use another and one more time after that. Then pull your manifold and check it out.

Necro-thread revival but I just ran a can of this on my 2010 6MT with 85k on the clock.

    Review:
Totally by the book run of it, stuck hose through MAF and all that. My IC piping is just too tight and I couldn't put the hose into the TB as other members have recommended.

After the hour long soak my first run on the highway scared me because my engine bogged really bad and all of a sudden a GIANT cloud of black smoke blew out the exhaust. GIANT, like a horribly running 1980's MB Diesel.

The car does feel smoother, I have been trying to fix this phantom lumpiness at idle (new plugs, re-gap, r8 coils) and although it is not gone, it is noticeably milder. I'm starting to think it is the catch can plate at idle something must be altering the pressure, when running everything is really really smooth.

Also, going through the gears the revs do in fact feel smoother, hard to describe but the slight notchiness I had is gone.

    History/Disclaimer:
Before I bought the car it had Stage 2 Oil Consumption fix so I don't know but totally doubt they cleaned the valves, I have only owned the car for <9k miles. Mods in sig.

I'm sure it is not as effective as a full soak and scrape but something definitely was removed as evidenced by the huge carbon cloud that belched out of my car.

Sorry to say but your but all your ass meters don't mean shit. "the car feels smoother" or getting a big cloud of smoke doesn't mean anything. he tiniest amount of oil burned can cause huge cloud of smoke.
The best and only way to carbon clean is to scrub it off. and the easiest way is to use a steam cleaner with baking soda powder mixed into your water when steam cleaning. I saw another guy do this one's on the forums once and it just came right off. I haven't had a chance to try it myself but it makes sense since soda is a base.

Dont waste money on bs like this, no additive will clean your intake valves because it will be injected straight into the combustion chamber anyways. If you want to clean your valves walnut blast them.

Best way to check is with a scope. I believe blbroo has done it a couple times and said his is pretty clean. I haven't checked my TB or valves out since I've been spraying. I'll definitely have to check them out.

I know lettuce posted a picture of his TB pre and post meth, and the difference is insane. Looks pretty damn close to new.

Agreed. I was amazed at how much stuff came out of the tail pipe when I started the car for the first time. It definitely felt a little smoother. Can't say much for any power increase but it certainly didn't hurt anything.

This stuff does not work!! Anything burning off is from the product or possibly cleaning the cylinder walls and or tops of pistons. The carbon buildup cannot be cleaned from additives. The only way is to add meth kit that sprays the valves or get in there and scrub by hand. Other than that there is no solution. Your ass meters of power gains and running smoothest doesn't mean shit.

Your saying it cannot work is no different than people saying it does. Words is words.

We need someone with a bore scope to do a before and after.

A good solvent CAN help to dissolve carbon build-up. However, it obviously wouldn't work as fast, or as well, as scrubbing. If this was done every 10k, from new, then I bet it's good maintenance. If your valves are already caked, this spray might get through the first layer or 2, but that's probably about it. If done enough times, I'm sure it'd work....but the cost would be prohibitive.

The Meth works because its constantly being sprayed over the valves and over time they are cleaned. There is no cleaner that is simply going to clean off carbon build up with one can. If you have ever done a carbon clean you would understand how caked on the carbon build up is and it takes some scrubbing to get them clean. Spraying a solvent on for a few seconds isn't going to do anything.
This is just marketing BS. Do it right or do it twice.

I plan to as well especially with the other benifits of running meth, Like cooler IAT, higher octane without having to pay out the ass for race gas. And they are cheap too. My buddy got a Devils own kit for like 300 off ebay to run on his 2.7 and then buys a bunch of wiper fluid from Walmart for like 2 or 3 bucks for huge bottles and then mixed up big barrels at once and has plenty to last for days while being very cost effective.

Also our cars have a decent sized wiper fluid resivour so your resivour can double as tank for meth and still be used as wiper fluid. So there is no need to use those tiny tanks provided with kit and be filling up in your trunk.

Yeah.. running meth is really a win win situation. I was pretty shocked as to how well it cleans off the valves/TB. Nice added benefit.

I bought my kit on eBay also, it was around $300.. but I'm running a snow performance kit. I added a couple things so I can run it dual nozzle, so it bumped the cost a little. Probably one of the best bang for buck mods I've done to date though.
