Muffler delete happening soon, need to decide between 3.5" vs 4" exahust tips

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey all,
I've done a bunch of research, but haven't been able to get information specifically on exhaust tips only. I've seen full catback exhaust setups etc etc, but I don't have that kind of money, or will I ever be able to justify that spend on the Audi (saving for a house, saving in general, trying to keep it on a budget). So, to save money on install, I have a mechanic friend that can cut/delete the rear mufflers, and weld new tips on.

My debate is between 3.5" vs 4" exhaust tips. Looking for opinions on what size to use? Calling all B7 A4 Audi owners that have deleted mufflers or simply done a cosmetic exhaust-tip update. There are a ton of brands out there, but I've narrowed it down to: Single-wall, angle cut (20 degree), stainless steel...just can't decide on the size. 4" looks custom/meatier/flashy... 3.5" resembles closer to stock size, not as flashy.

EDIT: ** I am not looking for power gains with this exhaust job, just looking to remove the rear mufflers, weld in SS piping, and then weld on the tips to gain some sound and better looks. **

Thanks for your help! Picture of the stock pea-shooters currently on the Audi:

So you're completely deleting the mufflers and welding big tips on there? Why not keep the mufflers and just put new tips on? There will be zero performance gain from the muffler delete...not sure what it would sound like, but I'm guessing not great.

+1 , 4 cyl turbo muffler delete, must be awful.

Imho, only boxer 4cyl engine get a ok sound with muffler delete.
    And 13000 rpm rev engines

Power gain : cat and downpipe.

Thanks for the opinions! I failed to mention, and will update the OP, I am not seeking power gains. Just looking to open up the exhaust a little as far as sound. Here is a sound clip of a simple rear muffler delete, sounds nice to me and can be had for fairly low costs:

The sound in that video is really a lot of my inspiration for this small project.

did someone say big exhaust tips? I have you beat

But seriously, get a nice downpipe with no cat. It will sound better and perform better than just a muffler delete.

Agreed with what everyone else has said, but if you're set on this route. I have 4" tips on my Magnaflow 16601 system

This is true (or a high flow cat if you don't want a test pipe). Techtonics tuning makes a reasonably priced downpipe and there are lots of cheap test pipes out there.

3.5" it is. These comments helped make my mind up.

And yeah, I'm pretty dead set on just deleting the mufflers and going with new SS exhaust tips. That's what my brother did with his B6 USP and it really opened up the exhaust note. I will never have $600+ for a full exhaust upgrade, or even $200 for catless DP or $150 for a test pipe. This is the most cost effective route for getting some sound out of the car and making it a little more fun to drive.

A easy way to get test pipe results is to just gut the catalytic converter. Most of the time you can even ru-use the old gaskets. It would $$$ in your own labor and a few nutz and bolts

To clarify I was saying get a test pipe but leave the mufflers in place. I agree that would be a pretty rough combination.

Although I've heard of this being done before, I do not want to gut my cat. Thanks for the suggestion!

I wasnt implying that you made that suggestion. I was saying that it was a cheap alternative to spending $$$$ on a test pipe.

Ordered 3.5" stainless steel angle cut tips, should receive them by this weekend. I'll post up pictures and a video clip when they get installed/completed for those that are also curious about doing this.

Muffler delete happening soon, need to decide between 3.5" vs 4" exahust tips

Mufflers chopped out, 45 degree pipes and straight pipes to the back installed. The tips look fantastic. There is a video clip at the end of this post, don't mind my friend he was being dumb lol it sounds so deep and alive. there is ZERO highway droning and it gets really throaty around 3500-4000rpms. I love it! Highly recommend if you are looking to do a inexpensive upgrade to your A4.

Muffler delete happening soon, need to decide between 3.5" vs 4" exahust tips

I did a 2" to 2.25" adapter to a 2.25" 45 degree bend pipe to a 2.25" straight pipe with a 2.25" to 2.5" adapter into the tips. The tips were 2.5" inlet and 3.5" outlet.

We had to bang on the first 2" piping that went over the stock pipe (where we cut off the mufflers) so that it was closer to weld. Wasn't hard to do.

It honestly is great. Nice and subtle when I'm not "gettin on it" and it has a great sound when it's WOT. For how inexpensive of an exhaust-job it was, I am very pleased with the sound.

We stepped it up from stock piping to the 2.5" inlet on the tips. So it went from stock size ~2" ----> 2.5"

If I can't find the time to do the drive-by videos today or tomorrow, I'll definitely get it done on Saturday. Having a hard time finding the time in the daylight after work to get these videos captured.
