    B8.5 Launch Control

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, I am the original owner of a 2014 S5 7speed. I bought the car with about 200 miles on it off the dealership lot. I just hit 20k today, and I am still problem free. Just one minor nuisance.

I have read multiple threads on how to launch the vehicle and I have repeatedly tried the steps that fellow owners have expressed. My car absolutely will not launch and has never launched for me.

Would anyone have any tips or additional information for me?

I was a bit nervous about the 200 miles off the lot, as that's a lot of test rides- but do you really think they could have launched it 200 times? (Which I've read is the limit.) Unfortunately I dont have vagcom.

Audi Tech says they don't come with launch control. My owners manual even says how to launch the vehicle, but the steps obviously don't work.

Anyways guys thanks in advance for your time and your response is appreciated.

You need to be in Sport mode. Launch control doesn't work in Manual or Drive mode. The transmission and engine also have to be at a normal temperature. They cannot be too hot or too cold, because if they are Launch Control will not work. Also, the wheels have to be pointed straight.

    1) straighten wheels
    2) Put the car into Sport mode
    3) Disable ECS
    4) Put your foot on the brake
    5) Put your other foot on the gas
    6) Wheeeeeee

If it's stock, 3k RPM's I think. Also, I'm not 100% sure, but I think the car is supposed to be in Dynamic mode, too.

Yep, revs up to 3k. If you feel the car wanting to go while u still have the break paddle pressed, release the throttle and then hit full throttle again. If it still doesnt work, let it creep fwd a bit, then full break again and reapply full throttle.

Launch control works just fine in Manual mode as long as you put the transmission in Sport first, before you put it in Manual mode.

    I love doing launch :)

Worth noting car has to be up to normal operating temps too. It won't do it if the front wheels are not straight.

Stop, press and hold ECS and it will say SPORT, keep holding and it will say OFF.
Then put the car transmission in S mode
Press brake and floor the throttle
The car will not attempt to move like it normally would if you put in D and try to drive off with your foot on the brake.
Wait for the rev's to stabilise around 3200rpm and then release the brake and woooohooooooo.

Even better with 480 horses pulling you ;)

Damn, really? I'ma have to try that. I did already mention the wheels being straight and the temperature issue, btw.

One thing to add here, you have have to press & hold the brake pedal HARD, before pressing the throttle to the floor.

Yep, really, however launching an S5 in Manual mode is a bit pointless as it upshifts automatically at redline anyway. In the RS5 there is added excitement as if you miss a shift you gonna bump into the rev limiter.

Also, be sure to hold the ESC button down for about 3 seconds to turn it fully off. It will go from ON to SPORT to OFF.

Not necessary. Single press to put it in Sport mode is all that's needed.

This may be common knowledge but be sure that when you press the go fast pedal press it fully (past the kickdown switch). I botched my first two attempts at the track because I was pressing only up to the kickdown switch in the pedal. Won't work unless you press all the way.

Thanks for the responses guys. I truly have tried all of this and have used different variations of everything from sport mode to manual mode, from esc being on normal- to sport, and completely off. Esc completely off being the correct way from my understanding. I've tried in auto and dynamic mode and even an individual mode I made.

Each attempt it will not rev at all it just bogs down when i hit the gas and then sometimes jerks really hard when I let off to creep forward (after failed attempts).

At this point i feel like I'm damaging my car. I guess there's no real way for you to help me if my car is broken, but it's nice to talk it out to be sure I haven't missed anything.

I waited a long time to post this because I needed to be sure I wasn't doing anything wrong. But now I've seen multiple s5s launch under configs that I fail with every time. I've tested when the engine is cold warm and hot.

Odd, when mine was stock I never went past the kick down? In fact you can do it with any throttle position. Now mine is mapped I have 3 different rpm's to chose from, 3000, 3500 and 4000 or something like that and to get the first you hover the throttle below max, then hit max and then hit past the kick down point.

How bizarre? Have you spoke with Audi or got a Vagcom lead? If you have the lead you can check it under transmission I think the count is?

On mine, the LC is at 3,200rpm or so. Even though I follow all of the steps, I sometimes have the re-cycle from "S" back to "D" and then back to "S" again in order for LC to function.

Is there another S5 nearby you can "test drive" maybe if it does the same ting it might be whatever you are doing or if it works then you know its your car. I have even done launch control in my A7.

Try recording yourself going through the procedure and post the video. Do a sweep of your gauges before going in so we can see what mode you're in and what your temp gauge is at. Camera on the tach when you do the brake + throttle maneuver.

I have a 6MT, so just wildly speculating. Is there a limit on the number of launches the ECU will allow? If so, possibly all the tickets are already punched?

The limit is 200 unless you have a dsg tune however OP says he is the original owner so unlikely someone else launched it 200 times without him knowing ;). Service techs however ... Lol I'm a bit paranoid about taking my car in for service for fear of techs launching it during the test drive.

    4,000rpm

I bought my 2013 B8.5 used and cannot figure out if it's tuned or not. When I use launch control it sits around 4,000rpm, maybe a little bit higher. Would this be an indication that my car is potentially chipped?
