What are the Common Wrench Sizes Used on Audi's?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a complete set from 8mm -- 22 mm Metric Wrenches. Anything else I may need for future repairs? I have suspension work pending on my to-do list. Would like to know. Thanks

I would get long and regular length sockets 8-22mm. I think the crank pulley is a 12 point 26mm (socket), but I can't remember exactly. As for wrenches, 2 each of 16 and 18 are handy for suspension work.

Thank you very much. I should always keep my toolset ready when the time comes. The Tri-state roads are really something, and I might need to replace my tie-rods soon, at least its doable from a DIY perspective. And if done right, maybe, just maybe, I can avoid an alignment.

So far I've used a 10mm for the battery terminal and Air Intake Box removal, 13mm & 15mm wrenches for the rear pads and rotors, and 19mm for the oil drain plug.

If anyone else has anything else to add to this compilation, please do, thanks again.

If you're building up a set of tools don't forget a set of triple square drive sockets. They look kind of like Torx but if you try and use a Torx bit you'll probably strip the bolt.

    Crank bolt is 24mm

You asked this question already and I gave you a very thorough answer. I wish you had listened.

With this I can do essentially anything on my car. Probably should get some universal joints, other than that I'm solid and it all fits in the little box.

If you want to save a ton of time working on your car, get a hammer drill and adapters to run your torx bits and sockets. HUGE time saver and should be in your box.

Haha, thanks for bringing that up for me. I was actually in the process of checking off the tools I've purchased based on your earlier response; perhaps I didn't consider wrenches at the time. I had to patch up my existing tool-set. I was a little uncertain as to the number of wrenches I should have handy. My next task is suspension-related, and I wanted to make sure I have all the necessary metric wrenches on me before I get started. It's good that I still asked regarding wrenches, particularly. Thanks again 4rings2turbos.

Very thorough response. Only thing I need now is a 24mm combination wrench. I have several ratcheting wrenches, but not all in the specified range you mentioned. Instead, I have go-through ratcheting handles, which should be equivalent.

I recommend a 1/2 drive socket for moving your crank bolt. This way you can put it on a breaker bar.

Other odd, large tools would be a big allen if your axle bolts are allen instead of triple square. I'll look shortly but it's either 14 or 17.

    17mm allen for axles.

24mm 12point socket for crank bolt, not only for undoing it but for rotating crank when doing any kind of timing work etc.

17/18mm offset box wrench for suspension work as well as sockets, you never know which ones fit better given different angles you can point wheel at.

Just get a full set of hex sockets, allen sockets and flats and that should do most of stuff you might need. Odd triple square sizes for few bolts including axle to tranny. Couple of sizes of Torx as well...

And definitely get impact wrench to drive these sockets, makes working on car FAR MORE bearable.

    Thank you very much

I do have majority of what is listed on this thread. What remains on my list now are the Odd Triple Square Sized Bits, Brass Hammer, and Offset Box Wrenches

How is this Triple Square set? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...A1UMBRA5ZTBCX8

Which drive size triple square bits are suitable for Audi-related work? I see these bits being offered in 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" as seen in this listing on Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/Capri-Tools-Tr...+Square+Metric

Should I just get the 3/8" drive set from VIM Tools?

    Thanks again

Also, should the triple square bits be stubby-sized? I have extensions on me, thus either or should be an issue.

    Short, Long, or both?
I came across this one as well,
    http://www.amazon.com/Neiko-10054A-T...s_2225089011_3

    I don't suppose I need tamper-proof XZN's, right?

Makes me wonder now. What do you all recommend for the intended application?

Would make sense to go for the shorter bit as the longer bits are more vulnerable to being stripped off.

Are S-Type and D-Type Wrenches ever useful on our Audi's? Own both? Or Own one or the other?

Do you all own XZN's in one single drive size (i.e. 3/8"?) or in varying drive sizes, 1/4", 3/8", 1/2"? For transmission related work, I'm sure I would need a drive size suitable for medium-to-high torque work.

I got a set from local FLAPS, these are XZN in 6, 8 and some other sizes and on the other end they go into 1/2" HEX socket (or 13mm). So basically I take say Impact, put 1/2 extensions on it (sometimes few feet to reach axle-to-tranny bolts from outside of wheel fender) then 13mm socket on it and insert the XZN into the socket, voila, done. Straight 1/2" drive XZN would be better but that wasn't available locally at the time I needed it so I am doing this McGyvering but it work.

Get proper sockets, not what I have (below):

Thanks, Julex, much appreciated. I'll definitely try to go for something of a higher drive.
