Bent valve noise? Good compression. Video included

Porcelain broke off of my spark plug(i guess recently. probably why it was misfiring yesterday) and I think it may have tweaked a valve or something to that effect causing a chatter knock sorta thing. I didn't pull the plugs since it definitely sounded like rod knock upon deceleration so I pulled my pan just to find out my bearings are good(then I found the spark plug(ngk bkr7e's)). I didn't have any metal in my oil when I drained it, but every forum I looked at there was that one guy who said he had a shot bearing with no metal in the oil...

My cam chain in good and lined up. Piston pin being loose maybe?
Any input if it's possibly a valve? It has 175psi. It was 180 a few days ago.

What it doesn't really show in the video is that it really did have a knock exactly like rod knock. It has kind of changed tones I guess. It may be that warm it sounds like rod knock and cold which is the video, it does not.

Is it possible it's just my spark plug? My grandpa was telling me that when you use starting fluid in a diesel the rods sound like they're going to blow up because it fires sooner or later than it should. And I guess it could be the same because the spark probably happens further up the plug... and maybe fires from compression........
I checked all the clearances on my rods and they were fine. Cylinder 4 with the broken plug had quite a bit of gas in it. I'd almost say a little puddle. I didn't have the rod noise this morning but did yesterday...
So maybe it's something wonky like the plug.... idk..?

Replace plug and report back I'd say. The spark could be arcing strange or extremely weak because of the lack of collar. Really strange that it broke like that. No idea how the engine handles debri like that.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah.. I don't know how it would handle it either. Threads on the Google say it'll spit it out via the exhaust valves, but that sounds like a best case scenario sorta deal. I'm going to put the oil pan back on tomorrow somewhat reluctantly given that I may have to swap a piston or something.. and see... Honestly with how strange it acts I think it may work.......

Well I guess I figured something out.. My stock aeb piston is cracked on the skirt. about 3/4" crack both sides. It's not a normal aeb piston I don't think. I have two different piston styles that both came out of an aeb. Both are 80.95 and both mahle. The crappy one is 81p26++ w8 and the normal good one is 81p27 w8+++. Not sure if that means anything to anyone.. Both are 20mm pins. I'm using the thicker one with 3 other crappy stock ones.. I don't know if it's a good idea for balance though?
The skirt had about .030 clearence on both sides, but were flush on both ends where the pin goes in or out. Don't know what that's about...
Does anyone have 3 of the better ones they're selling?

I'm guessing the diesel sound is from the plug and knock from the pistons.

Does anyone have any input on which aeb pistons you have? Looking on eBay I'm finding the top one is from an aeb also, but as seen I don't think they can handle the claimed 600hp.

Does anyone know what I can find the bottom piston in? It came from a 99.5 aeb

Sooooo I got rid of the knocking via the toasted pistons, but it still has a tick/rattle at idle. I guess I'll figure out some way to check my oil pressure. 0 sludge and nothing in the pickup tube.
It doesn't seem like injector ticking. It definitely started all at once. I don't think it's my cam tensioner either. At least it's nothing like the youtubey videos i've watched.

I guess I have forged pistons and all stainless ex valves again.... so it wasn't a complete disappointment having it still make noise.

I took my turbo oil feed line off and started it. It shot about 15 feet, so I have some amount of oil pressure.

I'm pretty convinced it's a hydraulic lifter. There are very few threads about it on a b5. Mostly diesels vw's.

Anyone think it's a bad idea to put half a quart of atf in? Or seafoam. When one goes bad do they typically get dirty/noisy, stuck open,....?

I'm pretty sure that's what it was. I put new oil in and 3/4 quart of atf. It was quieter after a couple minutes of idling and after 7.6 miles of driving it isn't making noise.

Thanks for listening to me talk to myself ;)

Hey, sometimes when you talk to yourself you just need a professional opinion ;)
Glad you got everything working okay though

    Nice work.

I always expect it to tick for a while after it's put back together. With that many lifters, one is bound to be a little slow getting it's mojo back. That said, I did have a hot tick at idle that wouldn't go away. At 200k I replaced the exhaust lifters and now it's nice and quiet again. I don't know how you track it down to the exact problem lifter. It was hard enough just figuring out if it was intake or exhaust.
