they check for recalls but do they check for software updates? i bought my car new from the dealership so they have the whole history.

i'm wondering why the tranny shifts are noticably harder nowadays. i doubt it's a software thing.

    +1 with this fella

If a re-flushed ATF and TCM (transmission control module) reset wont resolve the problem, it could be the solenoid body valve.

Most of the time replacing with new ATF will fix the problem.

Unless there is a customer complaint directly to a transmission concern, then no, we don't check if there are updates. The only 'updates' are campaigns that the customer is made aware of. However, there are occasionally technical service bulletins that pertain to certain customer complains, that occasionally get fixed with a flash.

Just for shits and giggles, I did run a random B7 A4 2.0t vin off ebay. In the case of B7's, there is one software update.

    Technical Service Bulletin

    Transaction No.: 2028053/2

37 TCM software update for downshift concerns.

    Release date: Oct 3, 2012

Customer may report downshifts not smooth when slowing the vehicle.

    Technical Background

Improved software introduced after production that reduces complaints with shifting characteristics. Improved viscosity of ATF lessens clutch grab during clutch activation.

    Production Solution

Optimized ATF (blue) introduced gradually in production years 2005 and 2006.

It entirely depends on the revision of your TCU part number and software level though, this may not apply to your vehicle!

I have a 2005 B7, and a copy of that TSB. VCDS shows the transmission type and software part # / rev fall within the TSB specs. Would you know if that update is still available to dealers?

There is actually another software update since this original post. My car(07) has software 050. Now shows 080 available, when looking at software revision. Dealership couldn't tell me what it "fixes"..

I'm curious if the dealer would have the option of using 0050 even though 0080 is the most recent rev, or do they just plug-and-play with whatever is the latest?

I've never used ODIS directly (but I have my remote programing company remote in and program Audis many times a month). What I do have direct access to is ISTA (BMW Factory diag interface) and when that programs the car, it checks and programs every module, from my understanding. I know it does this because I've re-programed corrupted DMEs that fixed specific issues.

I can only assume most euro OEMs do the same

(If you update one module, that could cause an issue with another, therefore, when programing the car, update everything is my thought processes)
