    hello everyone.

    05.5 a4 quattro 2.0t manual transmission.

I need a new starter, ive checked some local auto parts store websites and some say their starters are for auto trans and some dont specify at all. are the starters different? can anyone specify?

I'm not sure I can answer your question 100%. However when I replaced the starter on my 2.0T/Tiptronic this past winter there was only ONE store in town that had them in stock. They had one for a manual and one for an auto. I didn't have time to check the differences then. Anyway, point of the rambling is to call the parts store and ask them to put their hands on the one they have in inventory. I went to three different parts store that either showed stock online, or through a phone call, and they "couldn't find it" when I showed up. Even the dealership pulled that mess on me :(

Pull your starter and go to the auto parts store and match it up to the correct one. There is most likely a physical difference between the two.
    Take a look. http://www.genco1.com/re_catalog.html

Look at the pictures from the lookup i linked you. it is very obvious. The automatic starter looks like a normal starter, the manual starter looks look it came from a different planet. If they show you what they have in stock you should be able to compare very easily.

Just remember that you have to mail back the Core, so that eats up some money..

I got my Starter from Hugh@Europa Parts for less than that with no core and it was an OEM Valeo. And they are in NJ so you can pick it up or ship it and have it in a day.

Call Hugh directly to make sure it can go out for overnight or just drive down and pick up.
