When is everyone doing Oil Changes???

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey everyone! Wondering if everyone is changing their oil every 5k or 10k. I know audi says 10k - but was just wondering what others are doing!

    Thanks!

When I got my 15' S4 I went ahead and got the Audi care to cover my first 4 services, just got the 5K done, they reset my service interval to come back after 10K 15K total. I guess I don't have enough experience with this engine to give you a good answer, my plan is to continue with the Audi care and after service every 10K with the mobile one 15K extended performance full syn.

I haven't had my first one yet but I plan on doing it every 5k. Why? Because Race Car. IMO 3k was always too soon and in todays more modern engines I think 5-7k is good. Been doing 7.500 on our minivan since 4k on the ODO it's at 100k now and all is great.

every 5k. 3k is way to soon unless your beating the piss out of the car every day. There is enough volume of oil in there to warranty 5K oil change even with beating on it. a normal 6 cyl holds 5qts. Ours holds 9qts. Thats 4 more than a conventional engine. I will do mine every 5K. I was going to get audi care but i think theres a time limit on it as well. I will run out of time on the plan over milage. I only put about 8-9K a year on the car. Someone else can confirm but i thought i saw that audi care had a time limit on it as well.

Holy s%t you guys are a wasteful bunch. Why do it so early when Audi recommends 10k. There's no reasoning behind it, Audi invests millions in they're engineers. It's not 1980 anymore so 3k-5k is an overkill. Modern oils and engines are far more advance to go beyond 5k, just my .02 cents tho. This subject's been beat to death . . .

I'm going to do my first oil change next week around the 7500k mark. I'm planning on sending a sample to Blackstone to get tested. If it looks good, I'll go to 10k and see what it looks like.

I just sent one in with 5500 on it and everything looked good and they recommended I go 7500 on the next. It was my first sample so nothing to compare to.

10k only came into effect after car companies started paying for scheduled maintenance. Look at all of the sludges 100k BMWs that were a child of the first free maintenance programs.

10k is probably fine. But for 60$ every 5k, it's peace of mind to me.

Audi Care "expires at 57,000 miles or five years from the original vehicle in-service date, whichever occurs first." -- this is for the 5/15/25/35/45k "non-select" plan. So yes, the standard plan can expire.

There are the Audi Care Select plans, which have different parameters.

Free maintenance programs have nothing to do with this. I've had early 2000 VW TDI's, VW at the time recommended 10k oil change intervals. I used to commute alot for work so by the time I sold it it had 318k miles on, there would be times where I wouldn't do an oil change for 15k-18k miles, and I had an oil analysys done around 250k miles and it came out perfect and this was actually done with the engine oil being at 12k miles. And this was done on a diesel engine which "looked" dirty 50miles after you did an oil change. Now i wouldnt recommend doing this but it's held me over the years, I dont do nearly as many miles in my S4 so I can/have the time of day to do the 10k miles oil service.

While interesting you cannot compare diesel engine oil change intervals to gas engines as diesels have always had longer intervals...impressive though that you went 318k on it....my buddy picked up a jetta TDI a few years ago as he commutes over 150 miles per day and loves the milage it gets

Yea whoops. I was thinking of my B7. I haven't changed my oil yet. Im getting ready to. The dealer did my first one for free. yea ours hold a little over 7 qts.

But yea For normal people and how we "normally" drive the car I would say 5K is a decent starting point. But realistically anywhere from 5-7500 is fine.

But back to increased oil change interval. They have only increased it a lot because the engine can hold more oil than a typical engine that same size. And requires synethic. But yea has to do little with who was flipping the bill. But not that much. I think BMW was 15K was it not. But some companies employed that philosophy since they were paying and stretched the oil changed out but didn't up the quality of oil and volume of oil. Look at GM prime example with their oil change life monitor. Talk about dumb. If you listen to that your engine wouldn't last 100k. If it did it would hate you severely. Most of their engines wouldn't have any oil left by 7500 due to oil consumption.

But it you drove the car truly normal it would probably be fine for 9-10K oil change.

Honestly If i could pick a cheap TDI right now i'd make it my DD, those things are bullet proof. If you do the timing belt, water pump every 100k and change the oil those things will run forever while returning 50 MPG. I have buddies that have TDI's with well over 400k miles without any issue, clutch, wheel bearings etc., amazing cars, proabably the most reliable engines VW has made.

Every 5k, and I have AudiCare.

The dealer did my 5k and 15k oil changes. Like most Audi dealers, they use Castrol 5W-40 Synthetic. I don't have a problem going 10k on a quality oil, HOWEVER, Castrol 5W-40 has been proven not to last 10k miles without negative affects. This has been proven using Blackstone oil reports.

I'm at 20k now, and I just did a change myself using a Mann filter and Motul Specific 5W-40. I'm sure it's partially the placebo effect, but I swear my car runs much better now and the engine is far smoother.

I will be going back to the dealer at 25k for an AudiCare change, but I'll likely supply them with my own Motul oil.

So if your changing the oil every 5k then y does it matter what the dealer uses. Im sure castrol can last 5K easily now with the reduced interval. If you paid for audi care then why not get your money out of it? The only thing i can think of is that you will get your money out of is if it's a DSG for the 35K service. will pretty much cost about 85% of what audi care costs.

Once a year for me that would be 6 k miles. In fact audi tech asked me during my first service if I was goiing to go 10,000 miles between changes. He did NOT recommend that. I told him. once a year which would be about 6K miles

My S4 has 31K but for the first 25K, I changed oil @ 5K intervals using dealer's supplied Castrol OE synthetic oil 5W-40 (Audi Care) and samples sent to Blackstone. Finally, after the 20K oil change all deposits dropped drastically. Blackstone suggested 7500 miles interval but I'm going the full 10K for the first time too see what happens.

At Audi recommended intervals, which for me is every year, as I never drive more than 10,000 miles per year.

I do the 3k due to NYC traffic. I sit in so much traffic I'm sure the hours of engine operation with my car idling in stop and go traffic adds to the 3k miles.

Every 7500 km for me. Have had the car less than a year (bought it used). Did my first oil change late June using Mobil 1 0W40 then went on a 10 day long road trip putting on almost 5000km. Car went in for it's 100,000 km Audi Care yesterday and got their oil. I will stick to 7500 for the life of the car unless I start hating it which is unlikely. I like the Mobil 1 oil and didn't have to do any top-up in between. Prior to doing my first oil change I had to add a bit but my car then had the fuel rail recall service done and they did the thermostat and PCV at the same time. So I assume the little bit of oil I lost was due to those components and not the oil...time will tell.
