    BMW F80 M3 - Discuss...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well....I'm thinking about it. I have seen the car in person and for the first time I can honestly say, BMW got it right with this model...for me at least. I love the car, but I also suffer from "I always want what I don't have.." syndrome.

I have owned a B7 RS4, Porsche 997 Turbo and now the RS5, out of the 3 the RS4 was my favourite of the bunch. Don't get me wrong, I love my RS5 but I have only had it for a year and I keep checking out the F80 M3.

Anyone else around here like this car?

I always see a reaccuring mention of m3 and m4 on here for RS5 owners. Your not alone for sure. Some have even traded in there RS for a bmw and even the c63 benz. If you want it, can afford it and you like the more ponies I say yolo.

Big fan of the M3/4. More so because of the power. JB4, intake, and downpipe is a solid 500+whp. Pretty sweet. Interior is OK honestly its nothing spectacular but its a nice place to be. The only thing that kills me is I just can't get over how it sounds. I've heard maybe 1 or 2 combinations of exhausts that were decent.

Its a great looking car as well when I see it rolling down the road its definitely a head turner. M cars are a buy though, they don't lease well.

The M3 sedan is a beautiful car as is the M4 coupe. I prefer the sedan and its not only beautiful but capable as well.

    Cannot go wrong.

I test drove the M4 and didn't think it was worth moving out of the RS5. However, the idea of an M3 with 4 doors and some dinan parts is something i can't seem to shake off recently. I love the RS5, but i miss the 4 doors and it pains me to say this, but the M3/4 (in my opinion) has more usable everyday power with the low end torque.

I'll probably be jumping into a 328 wagon, so yes I like the car - and even with a downgrade in power, it's an upgrade in driving dynamics/feedback, etc.

As good a performers as the M3/M4 may be, and as much as I'd love to have one, I'll stick with my RS5. A high power RWD car here would be sentenced to the garage for 7+ months of the year. Either that or in a ditch 7 times a year.

Stock the M3/4 doesn't sounds like crap and is extremely raspy when cold. With tune, intake, downpipes you can make it sound pretty good. Still doesn't sound as good as the RS5 though.

Id agree with you. Stock the RS doesn't sound like anything. You can't even hear it WOT with the windows open past like 60mph.

Good point! If i lived anywhere with snow i wouldn't even think twice about getting rid of the RS. I had an E46 M3 when i lived up north and even with snow tires on it couldn't do much. The M with RWD you def have to be ready for the rear end to step out, but if you have some good driving roads its fun to be able to slide it around a bit . Too bad there are no good driving roads in south florida.

    This
I was in an m4 the other day and was shocked at how bad it sounded, like a really powerful leaf blower. I looked up aftermarket exhaust videos and they still are nothing to write home about. The car looks good and drives well... but that sound

Love the look and power, but hate the way it sounds like a leaf blower. Proud to say that Audi gets the exhaust note right even when using smaller displacement engines.

F80/82 M3/4s have exhaust flaps to keep the exhaust quiet by only opening one side of the exhaust when not under WOT.

Aftermarket tunes and special modules are available to force it open whenever you like and it does sound a bit better. Still, it's a 3L turbo car.

It'll never sound as good as a V8 to my ears but tuned it will pull bus lengths on a lot of today's v8 cars. Choose what's right for you!

Beating a dead horse here, but I sat in the m4 and wasn't impress one bit. Same goes to exhaust. At the end of the day, if you can convince yourself that you're paying 70k for the performance factor go right ahead man.

I'm lightly flirting with it I guess . However, things like turbo lag, inferior throttle response, leaf blower sound, interior etc. keep bringing me back to the RS5. Mainly, though, what keeps me with the RS5 is the confidence inspiring drivetrain. Even though the M3/4 is faster on paper, I remain convinced that in the real world, the RS5 can be driven faster thanks to its drivetrain. The RS5 is just enough rear-biased to have some oversteering fun in the canyons without ending up at the bottom of a cliff and without constantly fighting the stability control. The RS5 just stays glued to the road even with the rear stepping out occasionally. The amount of torque of the M3/4 on just the rear wheels doesn't seem very usable in every day driving unless you enjoy the DSC constantly reigning in the car or putting yourself and everybody around you at risk if turning off the DSC.

The M3/4 is a superior machine. If I didn't have to deal with snow and ice I'd be in one now. The interiors have come a long way and it's noticeably faster in the straights and significantly easier to throw around due to its lighter weight than my RS5. Not to mention the tuning capabilities. I think Dinan has a 550hp package that retains warranty. I say do it......the car is a beast. You could always wait to see what RS5 or RS4 Audi releases before you pull the trigger though

I have both the f80 m3 and 2015 RS5. Both are fully modified suspension, exhaust, rims, etc. The rs5 is my daily driver because I like the 2 door aggressive look and my gf needs to drive the 4 door more often.

The m3 is an absolute beast and literally kills the rs5 in terms of raw power. The Rs5 has a superior interior and an unbelievable exhaust note after I added the AWE exhaust. I wasn't a huge fan of the M3 exhaust but I have recently put on the AWE switchpath and it has had me picking the m3 more often than the RS5 to run errands on the weekend.

It really is about just experiencing another car. They both have positives and negatives. People here make it out about BMW and Audi - it really isn't. It's just like living in one part of your city and wanting to experience another area for different benefits. If you have had your fun with the RS5 I would take a look at getting into an m4/3 they are priced aggressively as I got 500 dollars over ED invoice and used 15's you can get on bimmerpost for the low 60's after negotiation.

Bottomline I love both of them. My plan is probably to get rid of RS5 next May for an AMG GT S and when winter rolls around trade my M3 for an AWD option - possibly a Range Rover for the girlfriend (M3 is a tough daily driver for her with all the low end torque)

They dont lease as well. Very pricey leases on those. I looked at them before buying my W204 C63 with P31 and LSD. I love my car. I pulled hard on an F80 M4 last week. The Stage 2 S4 could only hang even with him and then he would pull.

OFC, my point was both cars are in need of aftermarket to send their best. AWE Track wasn't nearly loud enough for me to consider its price tag. Track extreme is great but its too loud and drones. Quality valved exhaust is the best but at 4k plus forget it.

pretty much the same reason you didn't get it... if i had bought the M4 i would have had to keep my F150 for the winter .. my wife thought we had too many cars as is.. I had 2 .. she HAS (SMH) 2 .. but my requirement was i wanted another Manual Transmission F/I car to replace my 350zTT .. and since she had an A5 she suggested the S5 .. i know i know.. it blows RS5 owners mind on this board that i didn't buy an S5 because i couldn't afford an RS5 and downgraded .. shocking huh

Some of those pipes made me chuckle. I've heard Audi 2.0 setups that sound much better. Still a great car, no hate here.

    Interesting.

At the end of the day given my condition (want what I don't have...), if I had the M3 instead of the RS5, I would probably be starting the same conversation on Bimmerpost asking about the RS5. I love the RS...and I know something else will always be out there that I will want. I have only had the RS5 for a year and it has been very good to me.

Some interesting thought's here regarding this car though. Glad I started the convo.

I can appreciate the sheer performance of an M3/M4, but there's just too many lines on that design. Even in OP's pic, there's just so many lines and shadows going on in so many places -- especially the front.

The RS5 will look great 10 years from now, but I'm not sure how this M design will age. My guess, not well. Time will tell.

bmw cars looks like a racecar for teenagers. fender vents, buldges everywhere. not that its ugly, it just doesn't look classy. maybe im getting old, but it doesn't do it for me. I tried really hard to like the 4 series but just couldn't. I still prefer the e92's.

however, u cant argue about the performance. sure its a beast.

love the 5 body because its sleek, classy, and mature.

I think you're all crazy. The lines, the sound....malarkey. The M3/4s are awesome. Opening up the exhaust and turbo will sound great together, I agree the RS5 looks way better but my experience with the M4 from a performance and feel aspect was great. I took the M4 on Monticello raceway against the new Lexus RCF. The Lexus RCF is the biggest pos Lexus ever created. Marshmallow suspension and horrible transmission. People say the RS under steers, they should drive the RCF. Horrible, terrible car. When I took the M4 out, it was quite possibly the best M car I've ever driven.

Totally agree. Not sure what they do to have a 3.0 Audi S4 and S5 exhaust sound better than the 4.0 M3, but it does all day.

I honestly feel the 335/435 sound better in terms of exhaust noise
