Anyone use a magnetic oil drain plug?

    Hey folks,

I have 20k miles on my car now and I'm going to do an "in between" [AudiCare] oil change today. When i bought my oil and filter, I also ordered a magnetic oil drain plug from EuropaParts. Does anyone else use a magnetic plug? It came with some copper washers, but I also ordered an OEM washer in case I just decide to re-use the OEM plug.

Given my car is bone stock, I was also wondering if anyone has ever encountered any warranty issues with using such a plug.

    I have this: http://www.europaparts.com/magnetic-...metalnerd.html

Save your money. Those drains really are not going to catch much. Just ensure you are changing your oil frequently. It all depends on how you drive it (i.e. hard or normal). City driving (lots of stop and go's) highway driving (more longer drives where the car gets up to temperature and is not sitting around). For me I change my oil every 3k, because of the way I drive it. I use Motul 5w40 personally, but any top tier oil synthetic will do.

If the manufacturer wanted a magnet in there they would of put one in there. Most automatic transmissions have one in there from the factory stuck to the bottom of the trans pan. But while it won't really help or hurt you. There's really not a need for it in an engine. The metal that does float around the filter will catch it and its so fine it will not damage the oil pump anyways. The only way i see it helping you is if you have a cam or main bearing problem. But at that point the drain plug isn't going to help the problem.

I got one from ECS as part of their oil change kits, to perform them in between scheduled services. Good to know that won't do much, because it would probably get tossed by the tech anyways.

You need to be careful with those drain plugs that have the magnetic section in the center...I've had those come out and leave the threads behind when unscrewing the drain plug.

A quick oil change turned into hours of knocking threads out

I'm running one.... because why not - it is dirt cheap and maybe will catch a piece of metal some day lol - for 10 bucks why wouldn't you?... That being said - I'm not expecting much... This is the one I got - http://store.034motorsport.com/oil-d...-14mmx1-5.html

I have one but have never used it, why, I don't like the washers that came with it. I like the crush washers better.

To answer your other question - changing a drain plug should not affect your warranty.

On another note - I have to say, the TD1 hype has seriously gotten out of hand if Audi has its owners scared of using non-OEM drain plugs.

Update: I changed my oil today but ended up re-using the OEM drain plug with a new OEM crush washer. I have also read that the ECS ones strip and leak very easily, but I have a MetalNerd/Europa one. (Which is now just going to sit in my tool cabinet)

I ran one before and it never really made any difference. I now use an extractor for oil changes, so I just stick with stock.

Do what? The bearings for the engine are metal. The crank is metal. The rings are metal. The cams are metal. All the lifters and rockers are metal. The engine housing is all aluminum and the rods and pistons. But most of the moving components are metal bud. If you have the block or head or oil pan coming apart you have a bigger problem.
