i'm a long time amg owner currently driving a s63 but have been captivated by the looks and performance of the rs7. I do wonder if the Mercedes solidity and concentration on nvh issues are equally met in audi products. if any of you have come from the Mercedes camp I would be grateful if you would share your impressions. any general thoughts/suggestions you offer would be helpful too.

I came from an 06 S65 AMG. Not a new AMG, but hopefully still a helpful perspective. Overall, very happy with the RS7. Fit and finish seem about the same. Overall performance...the RS7 is faster and quicker, but the massive torque of the AMG made it feel faster seat of the pants. I do miss the super responsive pedal feel of the AMG. Touch it, and the car goes...no lag whatsoever. The pedal on the Audi feels very computerized and sluggish compared to the AMG. The RS7 looks and feels more "sporty", while the AMG was basically a rocket-barge.

Never owned an AMG, but I've been in plenty. I feel that Audi spends as much if not more attention to NVH issues as Mercedes and the others. My S6 is insanely quiet in the cabin -- almost too quiet (I like to hear the exhaust crackle every once in a while).

I haven't owned a high end MB before but i did a lot of research, comparisons and test drives between the RS7 and the E63 Wagon before purchase and my conclusion was that the Audi was clearly superior. And i REALLY wanted the wagon. I just couldn't justify it to myself for the following reasons:
    1. audi has a 4 year maintenance plan you can buy to keep everything up to oem standards. mb doesn't have this option for AMG vehicles where i live.
    2. the benz looks dated and not all that interesting compared to the rs7. i look back at the RS all the time, i don't think i would do that with the benz.
    3. interior tech, the audi beats it hands down especially now with the refresh 2016 models.
    4. interiors are very similar in terms of quality. i like the cleaner less cluttered look inside the audi.
    5. better stock performance imo. faster 1/4 mile and better handling imo although the benz is no slouch. the benz does have the edge as they offer ceramic brakes as an option that audi won't give us here.
    6. after warranty maintenance costs will be significantly less with the audi. mb service is ludicrous pricing, like they're doing YOU a favour when you bring it in.
    7. in terms of noise, vibration, harhness i think both are excellent from a design perspective. heck, on a recent road trip over uneven pavement i was hearing a vibration that was annoying me and lo and behold, it was my camera i installed vibrating against the windshield. nothing else on the vehicle made a peep. i was impressed.

both great vehicles, you really can't go wrong with either. choose the one you want to drive every day and figure out the details later.

I have not owned a recent mercedes, but I can add a few interesting notes. If you want NVH to be limited, definitely look at the default air suspension. Also, the OEM tires (19s or 21s) have some new tech in them (like styrofoam) to reduce road noise which is a nice touch. I'm happy with the 21s because they look really nice, but I bet the 19s might feel a little smoother in comfort mode. Also, the RS7 has 4 doors unlike the new S63 AMG (I thought the S class had 4 doors before?), so I'm able to haul my kids around in it and they love it! "Let's go in daddy's car!"

having grown up in AMG and all varieties of MB.

You will never find another vehicle that offers the enveloping feel an S class vehicle will offer. the S63 is amazing, the 4matic version currently makes it very appealing. Seats, the new command system etc etc...

While I don't own an RS, my S7 is nice, but not like S class nice. The S class is nice enough that you see enough people being driven in it. The RS/S7 - is less so.

There is a reason for that. The RS7/S7 is a very driver oriented car that also happens to be able to fit a lot of stuff in the car. If you are looking for a faster car (and cheaper) - the RS7 would fit the bill. Is it comfortable enough? absolutely, but it's not quite executed like the way the S class is.

I am only responding under the assumption you would be considering a current gen S class btw.

You wouldn't take the S63 to a track day...you could, but it's silly. That is NOT to say the RS7 is a real track car either, it isn't; but you can and would look less silly and would have way more fun.

Current gen S63 Command system is also better than the updated MMI in the 2016 RS7, and I have to say, there is nothing quite like seeing that AMG seal stamped into the center console leather.

I think both are exciting cars, but it really boils down to what is it you want to achieve: sport performance saloon (RS7) or a sporty saloon (S63)

also keep in mind, S63 has 3 rear seats, RS7 is 2+2. AMG exhaust note is more raw, but you won't hear much of it inside the cabin, RS7 is like a high pitch bark (F1 style), and you'll hear it for sure + the burble popping instills all sorts of giddy feelings.

I'm partial to the RS7 because well, i drive an S7. But having been in every S class iteration for the past 30 yers and driven daily the last few generations as a daily for awhile, I just have to say, that MB gets it right when it comes to comfort with a touch of sport.

    Audi is refined performance.

BMW to me is like rabid dog with a muzzle.

My last 3 leases were E55 and 2 E63 AMG's. Wanting a change, started a new lease on a 2016 RS7 in April. I would say fit and finish are about the same. AMG definitely has better throttle response, it has slightly better steering and handling is about the same. RS7 has better brakes, feel more solid and is faster overall when engine is set to dynamic mode. It would be better if it is a 5 seater instead of 4. Overall, I am happy with the RS7.
