    2015 RS5 last year

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Any idea why this will be the last year for the RS5. I believe it was only a 3 year run. Is that normal for RS's cars?
Any more value since this will be the last production year or thet are not a great selling car? Thanks

RS cars are limited production. They've traditionally come out towards the end of the lifecycle. Production of the RS5 has ended because starting next year the next generation of the A5/S5 will be sold in Europe and will come to the USA for 2017. The current RS5 only came to the USA after the facelift, so we only got 3 model years. In Europe it had been on sale since 2010. The RS runs are getting longer for the US market, though. We got the RS7 much earlier in the lifecycle for example.

This all comes down to the millions it costs Audi to federalize each model for the US market and the changes they have to make in order to sell the car here. Bringing a particular model to the US first has to make financial sense, then it has to undergo required redesigns to meet US regulations. For example the RS5 needed the rear crash zone to be redesigned. That's the reason we can't get the DRC suspension.

Here's an interesting article that shows how much it costs to bring a car over here.

No there is not. The number 1500 was actually widely misunderstood. The production target for the coupe was 1500/MY for 2-3MYs total, so 3000-4500 total sold. The real world numbers are slightly above 1500 for '13 and '14. Several members have posted the sales numbers from AoA here. If you do a search you'll find them. On top of that the cab had a production target of 500/MY.

Great thank you! I have a phantom black 2013 with black Alcantara interior, is there a way to find the which number produced I have? I tried checking the sticker inside the driver door jam but couldn't decipher it.

No way that I know of. Call AoA with your VIN and see if they can tell you. I didn't think about asking when I got those numbers for mine. The last 4 of my VIN are 1510, so, they definitely were not built in sequential order starting from 0001

I just saved you some time...call AoA and speak with a specialist...tell them you'd like to find out which number your RS5 in the production process. They will take your VIN and research that internally with contacts in Germany.

I just gave them mine and await their call back (which I don't anticipate today)

That's great! I just one follow up. Your rep said there were 1452 2013's sold. I thought Audi was producing 1500 in total, as in 500 per year. So is it 1500 per year?

correct. I think superswiss mentioned it above, too. Approximately 1,500 per model year; not in total.

And AoA will only give production nubmers if you have a VIN for that year. So, I wasn't able to get the numbers for MY14 and MY15.

That is precisely the kind of info I've been looking for! So basically we have to call AoA and give them the vin, then wait for their call back on the number your RS was produced, am I getting this right?

Yes, that little ruse of 500 per year for three years got me wasting my time getting my order in on the first day possible in Apr 2012, for them to crash it an hour before pickup in Sept. An old story but a lesson learned on how not to make a car so important to you.

When I asked AoA about the RS5 production # they want my VIN and here what said:

"According to our vehicle data file, the following information is what we have available. These numbers portray the production numbers for models built for the U.S. market for the model year you are seeking:

Thanks for your efforts in regards to your VIN #. I was wondering how many Cab's Audi had made/sold in my model year. Turns out it is 92. Now it has me wondering if that is the high/low or avg. # on an annual basis for RS5 Cab's.

When I contacted AoA with my VIN they told me 627 RS5 coupes were delivered to the US in 2015, of which 22 were Misano red with my config. The sequence number is total number of cars produced by Audi, given the tail numbers of the VIN they are meaningless to determine where your car specifically was in the line up or delivery not does it denote that your car was #x built. I only surmise from what AoA inferred and timing that mine was if not the last then certainly one of the very last delivered.

However, it seems you can still order some RS5's in Australia and other places where they've not reached their quota based on friends in Australia who called their VW/Audi dealer and were informed they could still order if they wanted to.

I'm sure someone in HQ knows exactly how many were produced etc. but seems it's not a figure they like to divulge other than the Corporate stats of "we've beaten Toyota and are number 1!".

There is much more than simply stupid over regulations, if that was the case, they wouldn't sell cars in Switzerland given their "environmental and other nonsense" laws ("execution Suisse" is an oxymoron used to bilk customers in Switzerland thousands in extra costs).

What is a serious issue as well is cost. Not cost in terms of how much it would cost to homologate a car here but also what the exchange rate is and what the market will bear. Having worked for many years for a multinational company in Switzerland (Digital Equipment Corp.) currency exchanges but more importantly pricing strategies were a constant headache as customers would buy VAXes in the US at a fraction, bring them to CERN and have the Swiss sub bear the warranty and maintenance costs.

To wit, the 2015 Touareg V8 gas (or Tdi) is not sold in the US, the reason being is that the base price would be in excess on $110,000 and no one in their right mind (though it is an awesome car yet still doesn't have a DSG box) would pay that. Whilst in Europe and ROW it is available as the market will bear the Euro cost and pricing VW demands.

But the article is right, it's not the Red Cross and unless they can get the margins they want, they won't bring a car over. Whether it's homologation requirements, exchange rates/pricing and/or "market" research.
