Best Course of Action to get rid of Air Bag light?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So about 8 months ago, in near 0 degree temps, I started my car and the Air Bag light was on. I haven't done anything thus far to remedy the situation, but I've often heard a simple jiggle of the sensor can fix the issue.

Any recommendations on where to start, where to jiggle, and how not to blow my air bag up?

    Thank you

No sense in just randomly jiggling wires. Scan to see which seat is triggering the code. If I were a betting man I would guess its the yellow connector under one of the front seats. They can come lose when seats are adjusted. Cleaning the contacts and securing them back together tightly with a ziptie often fixes it. If you just jiggle it to put it back into action, then the connection is likely weak and will just result in breaking connection again.

However, you are just wasting time randomly hunting unless you know which airbag sensor is triggering the code. I cannot remember if you have to manually clear the code after fixing it or if it will reset itself once it detects everything is fine.

Regardless of what you "jiggle", the airbag light won't disappear on it's own even if the issue is fixed. The usual way to clear the light/fault is with VAG-COM / VCDS, and this can also be used for diagnosis.

Sounds typical of the airbag module going out.. There is a thread that I created a few years ago.

Step one is still to get a VCDS check on the car.

Scan the car via VAG for errors. I have a broken clock spring which disabled my driver's airbag. Until you scan, you have no clue of knowing which air bag is the culprit.

I had the connector issue under the driver seat. I pulled it apart, put some dielectric grease, and used a zip tie to keep it secured together. Cleared the codes and was good. Easy $1 fix and worth trying before going all out on diagnosis

Someone correct me if I'm mistaken, but to my knowledge B5 airbags won't deploy If there's a fault.
    Hopefully you've got vag-com..
If you can't scan it quickly, just have it sorted at the dealer, not that I'm a dealership kind of person. But...Airbags are important.

I had this happen this winter to me. Airbag light would come on most of the time when I started my car. Since the winter has passed it hasn't come back. I'm sure it will come back once it gets cold again though.
