Disconnect battery after bolt on mod?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Total newbie question...... but the old adage used to be after you've modified a car(put an intake and exhaust on in this instance) you'd disconnect the battery to reset the CPU so the computer would start fresh with the new upgrade. Does that still hold true with modern B8 Audis? Within the past month I've put a new exhaust on as well as an intake.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

It does hold true. The ecu seems to adapt better/faster if you disconnect the battery. I'm all about leaving the negative wire off overnight, but a few hours at minimum.

I like to leave the negative off for a few minutes with the door open so the light drain the residual charge. It's been said you can touch the negative cable to the positive to quickly dissipate the residual charge. I like to do it with each Bolton

Yes, I was just told by a very knowledge Audi technician/modifier/enthusiast now turned Service Manager that the Adaptation values will reset if you pull the negative cable off for at least an hour. This will give you a clean start of Adaptation values so that the ECU can adapt accordingly to the new bolt on mods that will probably enhance certain parameters :)

Do our cars have an auxiliary battery for things like radio stations and MMI settings? Or will all of that crap need to be reset after pulling the battery cable?

My mmi settings don't seem to be affected when I do this at least as far as my sounds settings. Not sure about radio stations

Does anyone know how long does the ECU take to adapt without having to do a reset? One would think driving around for a few miles would do the trick, considering that the monitoring is done constantly.

ive personally never removed the negative terminal when doing a bolt on mod to any of my cars. It just allowed it to adapt on its own after driving it a little bit.

In my experience it takes days for things to get back to normal and perform up to expectations. I try to drive it hard during the first couple days.

I've tried it on 4 cars now both ways and every vehicle so far seems to adapt quicker and better if you do the battery pull. Most of the time it was because I was too lazy to do it at first, but then would find myself not so impressed with my new mod.

When I would pull the battery overnight, within days I would always be much happier with the performance. This was especially the case with my Roc Euro intake on this car. Honestly it really didn't run that great for months and never adapted properly. I had to do some work on my amp in the trunk so I disconnected the battery. I left it disconnected overnight because I had good experience with previous vehicles in hopes that my intake would perform better. Sure enough, my car was performing much better than before after a few days of adaptation.

If you are happy with the way your car is performing then don't do it. You aren't losing anything by trying it and like me could be much happier after the fact.

I know in the S2000 I would just pull the backup fuse and it would do the same thing as disconnecting the battery without me losing any saved information (radio stations and all of that). Is there not something similar on this car?

I won't be doing mods for a while but still good to know.

I would just pull the ECU fuse on my RSX-S whic is easy to do. I too am wondering if there's equivalent fuse on the S4?!

Is it the positive or negative cable? I have heard both as the solution. Or, does it matter?

Just installed my Roc Euro about an hour ago. I didn't pull the battery cable and the car is running perfectly. A rolling start in 1st gear definitely slammed me back in my seat more than it used to. I know these intakes aren't gonna give you more than a few ponies but I definitely feel a difference.

So, I dunno. Like you said, it's performing fine so I think I'll just leave it as-is and if it starts behaving badly I'll pull the cable. Guess every car is different.

Last night I unplugged my negative terminal when I went to bed. This morning after connecting the negative the only setting I had to reset was the clock. Took the car for a little spin and the car "feels" like it drives better and has more horsepower (could have been my morning coffee kicking in too.....)
