DIY Garage in North Reading – Lift Rentals and More

Gotta give a big shout-out to http://www.ucanxgarage.com/ - U-CanX in Reading Mass. It’s a DIY auto repair place where you can rent lifts by the hour, along with hands-on assistance from an actual mechanic if you need it.

Like many folks in the Boston area, I live in an apartment without a dedicated driveway, and my street is on a sliiight incline, which means I have to beg neighbors for driveway time, or risk doing projects in the street with cars driving by. So for me, this place is an absolute god-send. Even better…this means I can do repairs and mods even after the weather gets lousy in November, instead of having to cram it all into busy summer weekends.

The rental includes the use of the shops tools, including air tools, workbench, acetylene torch, etc. The owner is a super nice guy, and he bailed me out when a project that should have been straightforward became difficult, he even fabricated some hardware on the spot. He was exceedingly generous with his time and his rates, and it’s a very friendly environment for amateur wrenchers like me.

The place has only been open 4-5 months. As an enthusiast community, we should do everything we can to keep businesses like this around!

Thanks for posting this info! We live in a condo in Somerville and our off-street spot is not flat, so I might rent their lift to swap out winter wheels/tires.

I doubt they have VAG-COM. They're not Euro-specific. Couldn't hurt to call and ask Rich just to confirm, but almost certainly not.

Yeah man, I was pumped to find this place. I was just there two days ago, did my tie-rods and a brake flush. A lift makes everything INFINITELY easier. And if you're a novice like me, doing a lot of stuff for the first time, it's great to have some expert "adult supervision" and a full compliment of tools at my disposal in case I get in over my head. Even if it's just to check my work before I button things up, it's great peace of mind. Especially with the weather getting cold, now I'm not playing "beat the clock" to do stuff before it snows.

Just check out their FB and Yelp reviews/pictures if you had any doubt:

Tell 'em Greg with the blue Audi (and the pain-in-the-ass swaybar mount!) sent ya.

Haha, no. Boost gauge is low priority now that you've told me what's what. Next up is trying to decide if rear-differential axle seals and/or the valve cover gasket & cam seals are in my wheelhouse, or if I'd rather leave that up to the pros.

FYI for anyone searching these threads....this shop just closed. Guess not enough people went.

This is why we can't have nice things.
