01E swap into b6 write up your welcome!!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just finished my 01e swap in my BAT B6 A4 I will include everything that gave me problems how I handled it and what you need for the swap here we go...

    (What you will need)
01E transmission this can be sourced from many vehicles your best bet is to get a b6 a4 3.0 parts car with the 6speed 01e in it that way all these parts will be transferable to your b6 1.8t
Other options to source the trans would be c5 a6 (what my parts car was) or a b5 s4

You will need the linkages for the 01e (does not matter which car as long as it's from 01e tran)
If you are not getting the trans from the 3.0 a4 you will need the axle flanges from a 3.0!!! The c5a6 and b5s4 axles are different (the axle flange is the cup that bolts to the trans not part of the axle)
Rear diff I used the a6 rear I have seen people use automatic 1.8 rears 6speed 3.0 rear if you are using the a6 like I did you will need to swap the axle flanges from your 1.8 rear and put them in your a6 rear they pop right in allowing you to use your a4 1.8 axles

Axles- okay so in the front now with your b6 a4 3.0 flanges you will be using b6 a4 3.0 axles. Now for your rear diff like stated above if you use the a6 rear you switch flanges to 1.8 flanges and use 1.8 axles if you use a 3.0 rear you can use b6 a4 3.0 axles and if you use the auto 1.8 b6 rear obviously order the b61.8 axles

    Driveshaft you will need a driveshaft from a b6 a4 3.0 6speed manual 01E (pretty straight forward)
Shifter and gear box everything bolted right up for me some people said they had an issue with the four bolts that hold the shifter up not lining up but like I said mine went on without a problem

For a clutch I used a fx400 for an 01e trans! (I orderd mine for a b5 s4) but my light weight flywheel is for the 1.8t <--- important because I don't believe the bolt patterns are the same for the 1.8 and 2.7 motor

The line from the master to the slave hooks right up nothing fancy there just a bitch to bleed lol

Okay now for the trans mount you will need the mount that goes to the crossmember but you will need the trans mount bracket from the b6 a4 3.0 6 speed manual 01E or you can make your own adapter like I did because Audi wants 200 and ecs want 195
I have also read that people use the brackets that mount to the side of the trans and weld brackets onto the subframe (the way I did it just seems easier to me)

The reverse light plug is different so all you have to do is get a pigtail that mates with the plug on the trans aka cut the one off the donor car and spice it in

Slave cylinder just be carful when putting it in a casting bump on the trans makes it difficult to put in straight so just be patient and make sure the rod is straight so it doesn't slip of the fork and fall into the trans which would result in you pulling the trans :)

I think that is everything if I remember anything I will update but for now that is all car drives great the gearing is a little weird compared to the 1.8 but very smooth and cruising in 6th gear is amazing feel free to ask any questions hope this helps I wish there was a thread like this for me but sometimes you gotta just do it for all the future swaps :) enjoy
I would also like Scott from advanced Automotion he got me the axle flanges and driveshaft awesome work overther go and check them out

Almost forgot the most important thing there is a spacer that comes off the 2.7 motor after a lot of measuring and seeing that the input shaft distance is the same distance away from the bellhousing on both transmissions I did not I repeat did not use it the car works flawlessly again this may be different depending on the clutch you use but for my setup I did not use it and it works perfectly

    I can confirm 3.0L's have it. I think 2.7T does. Not sure about 4.2L V8 (S4, RS4).
ETKA confirms this, showing it on the back of the engine.
During a swap, I measured first. Had I not installed it, the bellhousing wouldn't clear the clutch-parts.

    Nice work.

Did you do this in your garage, or did you have access to a lift? Also how much did this run you, 2K?

Based on the 2nd pic I'd say it was with a lift.

I've been wanting to so a 6-speed swap for a long time. Any more pics of the swap???

i meant from the transmission/rear diff to axle/drive shaft. i thought my 01e would bolt right into my 5spd cross member with a 6 spd mount. there's some sort of plate that goes in between?

No I didn't run into that issue tranny bolted right to motor and right to the drive shaft and drive shaft bolted right to rear end

If you mean the plate that the tranny mount bolts to you need the 3.0 one or you can make your own like my plate in the picture

The drive-shaft has paper gaskets where it meets the diff and gearbox, to keep its joint grease from escaping.
01X/02X mount bolts to a bracket, shown in #10.

Reviving this thread. Swapping an 01E from a B5 S4 into my ’04 3.0 car with 02X currently. OP mentioned that the shift linkages from the 01E must be used. Is that the linkages only, or does that include the shifter assembly itself too? Meaning, will my existing shifter assembly hook up to the 01E linkages? JHM notes a difference in the shifter assembly itself between 02'-03’ 01E B6 and 04’-05’ 02X B6, which is what makes me wonder if the 01E linkages can even hook up to the 02X shifter assembly.
