What is a good weight for Tire/wheel?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    I have 20x10 Vossen wheels and 255/30/20's on my 12 S4 now.
I ordered a new set of 19x9 Forgeline wheels with Michelin PSS in 255/35ZR19's
I looked up on the UPS tracking info and they have them at 53 pounds per wheel and tire mounted.
    Is that fairly low weight?
I bought these as my goal is to get my car in the 11's and it was suggested to me to lose the 20's and go down to some 19's.
I haven't weighed my 20's yet but really hoping going to this wheel and tire package it will get me a tenth or two improvement in the 1/4 mile.

forgeline has some really nice looking wheels. which ones did you order? Most flow/rotary formed wheels in those dimensions are between 20-24 lbs i think. Fully forged wheels are probably in the same range and a little lower?

you should post in the regional section next time you go to the track. i'd be willing to meet up

Sorry friend try again, 20" are heavy tire alone is,25lb. If you want less rotating mass go 19@17lb per wheel. It will cost you thou. 53lb is a lot of weight to move quickly. Also try staggering your fronts for less rolling resistance if you're all about your 1/4 mile runs.

Any cast wheel in 20x10 will be heavy, close to 28 or even 30 pounds. Unless your Vossens were flow formed, they should be around that weight.

If low 1/4 mile times are your goal, it would be beneficial to keep the Vossens or Forgeline as your street wheel and pick up a super light weight wheel like 18" Enkei RPF1 for 1/4 mile. It's relatively cheap, strong and very light. Another thing, light weight rotors will give you better results than light weight wheels.

    18">19">20"

The only thing you are gaining with a larger wheel is more room for a BBK.

Well it says 53lbs for each package, not really sure what they are package like, so I hope they work a lot better than my 20's

i think you guys need to reread his post

he knows his vossens are heavy
    he ordered lightweight, forged wheels
he probably knows they are going to be light, but was inquiring as to how light and what is ideal for improving 1/4 mi times

    right Bill?

Got it, sorry misread the post. 53lb per wheel is heavy especially on the 19" you should be somewhere around,40lb or less @19"

    Yes that is correct. Lol
Maybe what they were packaged in weights a few pounds. Lol
I would have went with 18's but I do have a big brake kit in the front and don't plan on removing them so I had to go with 19's

Interestingly enough, the weight of tires between 18"and19" is,about the same or within 1lb, so it's all wheel at 18" unless you go Hoosier if they make our sizes. So the margins are getting skinnier, between 18 and 19"

I'm going to say it's almost impossible to get a 19" set close to 40 lbs. Around 45 lbs. is great, 50 lbs. is good. The lightest 19" tire in our size range in 24 lbs. The lightest 19" wheels are going to be around 20 lbs. short of something very exotic. Anything you would save by going with a 18" wheel would be in mostly the wheel itself.

If your shipping weight is 53 lbs., my guess is the tire and wheel package is around 50 lbs. That's still a pretty good weight savings over stock or your 20" wheels.

If you are really serious about saving weight in terms of rotating mass, you need to consider light weight rotors. That will save a significant amount over stock.

    100% agree.

I'm looking for new wheels and tires and want more grip than the PSS's provide and there are not many options, all of which are heavier than the PSS's (26-29lbs). And without spending a fortune on forged wheels most of the wheel and tire combos I come up with are 48-53 lbs. All of this is for 19".

Correct, however he didn't say cheapest, he asked if 53lb per wheel is "fairly light" for 19" the answer is No it's not light at 53lb for 19"
So let's do kindergarten math shall we class following that the packaging weighs 3lb per wheel, we have 50lb per wheel - 24lb for tires that's. 26lb per wheel, that's one heavy wheel.

    Cheers

The ones you ordered look good but aren't the lightest.. If your plan was to keep the vossens and have a lightweight track setup, I'd opt for something else. Def go with the JHM rotors if you are serious about going fast

I'm well aware of just about every wheel option in existence.... The APR wheels aren't available.

There are several options for 19's that weigh less than 20 lbs., but you're looking at something really expensive when you get into the 17-18 lb. range. The closest affordable wheel is going to be a flow-formed wheel or lower end forged wheel in the 20-21 lb. range. Those start out at a reasonable $1200-1500 for flow-formed (Renn, VMR, TSW) up to $4000 or so for a lower end forged wheel (BC, RSV, etc.).

You mentioned a 40 lb. wheel setup and staggered tires- both of which are ridiculous options for different reasons. Please just stop....

We did a measurement here for our RS-51 wheels in the 19x8.5 with Michelin PSS tires and it came out 44 lbs. (unsprung weight). Hopefully this helps everyone looking for options!!
