    BORLA xr_1 ???

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My next project for my car is the exhaust system.
    I have a 2004 s4b6
And I am going to do a custom exhaust system with FI downpipes.
Still debating to go catless or with cats.
    FYI, I live in Colorado.
And yes, they do require cats.
As I was talking to someone the other day there is a way around it when comes to emissions day, if I was to go catless.

    Doing some youtube searches.
    Yeah, Borla's sound pretty mean!
Im looking at all the XR-1's. webstire ( Borla XR1 )
As far as tubing I know it has to be a 2.5"
    Now my questions is...

*As for the type I see(Multi-core / Sportsman / Bullet)
Whats the difference with those 3.

    *For muffler Shape.
Is there a difference in performance/sound?
Or it doesn't matter, it's up to me what shape I like better?

    I would call them up
But there phones calls are only mon-fri.
So I did send them an email pretty much saying the same thing.
Once I get response I'll update what they told me.

I just want to here from you guys who do have this set up or close to it.
    Thanks,

The shape, size, and packing all make a difference.

    I went with the 40941 muffler. I have a 2.5" catlass system.

No I was waiting for the mufflers to get burned in a bit and then my timing went south.

Fast Eddie has a small clip somewhere. His sound is what convinced me

The small clip is on here in a thread i posted last year i believe around November. Search my name and audi sport run and it will probably come up (also i have pics from waterfest 2014 i think there may be a vid there too). The setup in that clip is Catless Milltek DP's with the XR1. I now have JHM headers with the FI exhaust until the axle with the XR1.

I have video from Quattro de mayo and i put the mic on the license plate when i was driving. While it sounds cool, its loud and the mic gets distorted because the sound. Ill see if i cant find a good video clip. Also, ill try to take some video soon but im going away for the week so i wont be around the car.

    still no word from borla.

So far what i have found for case sizing
bigger case size = less loud, ...deeper tone...???
small case size = loud , not so deep tone...

    Is this true?
I ask because I was able to find from one source only

Right now its between these two
    40941 Borla XR1 (12" x 4.5" x 7.88")
    or
    40942 Borla XR1 (16" x 4.5" x 7.88")

You most likely won't get an email response. I called Borla and talked to their tech line for about an hour the one night.

    Yeah me too
So the muffler place will let me install the downpipes
so from my house or your house depends when you leave
I get to ride with just downpipes loud, loud, haha
once I bring the car there he'll do his magic

    This is my thought process
Since im going catless on the downpipes
Im thinking of going with 40942
    Reason is...
Catless gives more sound then w/cats
40942, the casing size is slightly bigger, so sound isn't as loud, but deeper tone
So in a way they kinda cancel each other out
Catless downpipes makes up for the other

    But again
In reality there will be not a big difference in sound...
    I guess we'll find out!

    Cool
So i did get an email from them.
    This is what they said...

    "Hello Mark,

Thank you for your interest in our exhaust! David has asked me to help explain the differences between these two mufflers.

The 16” long mufflers will only be slightly louder than the stock rear mufflers already installed but you will notice the tone shift to be slightly deeper with a better low rumble. If you want the system to be noticeably louder at all, you would want to use the 12” mufflers which will still provide a similar rumble at a slightly higher volume.

Will you still have a front resonator on the new exhaust after the cats are removed? If so, I would recommend the shorter 40941 mufflers or you risk not hearing much difference in the sound at all. If you are removing both the cats and the resonator though, then I would recommend you use the longer 40942 muffler.

    Thank you, "

I think I know what I am going to do now.
    Go with the 40942's

Thanks For you Help David & Chris from Borla!

Also, just wanted to say that after you install the downpipes, you don't necessarily have to drive it straight piped to the shop that's gonna fab up your exhaust. I'll text you a link to some cheap 2.5" to 2" couplers you can stick on to use your stock exhaust

Do you know which length XR1 mufflers you went with? or what part number they were? I read through your thread but didn't come across which ones you ended up going with:

I live in Colorado and have owned (2) B6 S4's

I ran catless downpipes with 2.5" FI Cat back..... every 2 years I had to swap my downpipes back to stock.... PIA but the only way I could pass emissions.

High flow cats typically go bad after 2 years and will fail inspection the next go round if they pass the first time..... I have owned 9 modified cars in 11 years in the state of Colorado and I have fought this issue more than most people will in their lifetime
    CURRENT:
C43 AMG - RaceChip Tune, LEM downpipes, Res delete, BMC intakes, H&R suspension
2015 SQ5 (Res Delete, X pipe, Throttle body hose, Air box mod, Control arms, APR (FOR SALE)
    2021 Atlas

At first the video was like a full length movie
