    Options for new cv axle

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've read around and it seems people have a hit or miss problem when purchasing the Feq or other axles. I need a new front driver cv axle as my current one is clicking. What's the best option for replacement?

autozone reman(they recut the audi cores) or raxles for brand new. Autozone has lifetime warranty which is why i used them.
Never argue with an idiot, they'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

yeah, surprisingly the reman's seem to hold better and most figured it was because they use the oem audi core. I recommend keeping your core though and just paying the 120(I think that's what i paid after tax) That way you could always have yours rebuilt.

Edit wow the b5 is even cheaper I paid 120 for the b6 3.0 axles.

I used O'reilly's Import Direct line... A little more expensive but no core. So I can rebuild my OE ones later.

Hey I was wondering if you had any experience with Raxles and if so how much would they be and are they worth it over the autozone re-manufactured axles. I just found that my CV boots are torn on both driver and passenger side yesterday and could use some feedback before i jump on one or the other.

One more for the AutoZone remans. Last weekend I changed out an axle on my sister's B6 A4 twice. The new FEQ had a bad inner CV joint right out of the box.

You sure its not the center diff fluid being low/old? that's what mine was, clicking almost grinding feeling/vibration when turning wheel full lock.

I ask because you would be surprised how resilient the joints are. Clean the old grease out of there and slap some OE boots with fresh grease and call it a day. The clicking is just because the joint is dry.

Last I checked NAPA no longer had Audi joints.

It looks like the NAPA axles are actually cardone axles.

Raxles. Expensive than autozone or China, but built to last.

Do you have to take the axle out to swap the boots? If so an extra $50 for an axle wouldn't really be bad

Not the outer boot. 50$ isn't bad for if it is an Audi axle. One thing to note though is that aftermarket boots suck. Something to consider

How do I just change the outer boot? And where do I get a boot from

It's been a while since I did it but you loosen the nut before you jack the car up. Then steer full lock to the opposite side you are doing the boot on, remove the pinch bolt for the upper arms and remove the outer axle. This is the flat rate way, doing it in your driveway there is no reason to do it that way especially since it's a good idea to do the inner boot as well and get a fresh boot.

    Get Audi boots

At least get the inner from audi. mind you, these are just suggestions. If you don't see the value just get a reman axle and be done with it.

I just don't want to spend more money on pieces of an axle than a new axle itself.

All axles are not created equal. Find out if the NAPA axles are still Audi and go from there

Will do. I'll go around to the 3 auto parts stores near me (autozone, car quest, and Napa) and see what the options are

Does anyone have any experience with ecs's boot kit? Only $30. But I don't want the boot tearing anytime soon again. Also how do I know that getting a boot and more grease will stop the clicking? I don't want to order it then have it still click and end up having to replace the axle anyway

I called auto zone, pep boys, NAPA, o'riley's, car-done, and they all said they no longer carried the reman CV axles. This was last week. Only option would be Raxles or used.

I've opted to rebuild my axle (inner boot is torn, so I'm just replacing and regreasing the inner/outer boot) since the boots are only $15 each lol. Buy the GKN ones, from what I know they're the same as oem. They come with new hardware too.

My temporary fix was some spare CV grease, saran wrap, and duct tape over the tear. Let's see how long it lasts haha.

Buy the GKN boots. They're the same as oem. I used it the last time and it's holding up fine. Comes with a lot of grease and all new hardware. Buy it from Pelican Parts and you won't have to pay ECS's stupid shipping prices

I ordered the gkn outer boot kit. Was $15. Hopefully this fixes the clicking! Much better than paying for an axle.

I just went to my local oreillys and autozone and while the oreillys did not carry any re-manufactured axles, the autozone did. I also confirmed that they were OEM axles since it had the Volkwagen and audi stamps on it.

So I don't need to remove the bolts holding the axle to the transmission then? Just the axle nut in the hub and it should slip out enough to swap boots?
