    Mid muffler vs rear muffler?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Is there a difference between an exhaust with a mid mounted muffler and one with a rear mounted muffler? Most exhaust systems for the s4 seem to have the mid muffler set up unless they are a twin 2 or a 2 muffler set up. Why is this? Is there a difference or no

Using a Mid muffler reduces drone the greatest. Dual muffler systems are great and have no drone. Even the single mid mufflers don't experience drone, from my findings.

Is it true in saying that an automatic car experiences more drone issues than manual?

From my experience, yes. You don't have as much control of gear selection. The automatic continually puts the car into a slower engine speed, not as bad as the newer cars though.

Found by searching this and all child forums for "exhaust drone". Make sure you search at least the last year or more.

That does give reference to my question but I would have never thought to search for a thread like that.

My 3.5 single with magnaflow mid only was quieter with less drone at hwy cruising rpms than the techtonics trudual 2.5" system it replaced. Mid only is the way to go in my experience if you can live with the 3.5" tail pipe. I didnt mind given the performance results

I'm getting a SSAC twin 2 installed today probably if ups gets here in time. I personally went with the middle resonator because I'm getting my pre cats gutted come early fall. I'm not a fan of loud raspy exhausts in my older age. I used to be when I was younger. But I like to fly under the radar now.

So I figured with piggie pipes done the twin 2 system would keep the noise down but still have a nice growl. If you don't plan on getting downpipes done the single muffler may be a better option.

I'll report back how the twin 2 sounds with stock downpipes. I'd imagine not much louder but a nice growl.

Had considered fabbing up some tips that would go from 3.5" to TD 3" if I can tuck them in. I have not seen any 3.5" inlet to true dual tips anywhere on the interwebs. I dont know if I can ever get into the single tip on our cars even with the unrestricted flow. 3" DP's/Mid pipes to 2.5" mid muffler true dual is working just fine for now with very little drone.
