    2006 S4 Transmission issues

I recently purchased my first Audi and everything seemed great on the test drive and it drive perfectly when driving "normally". Once I owned it for a bit I tried to see what it had at a little harder throttle. If I got hard enough on the throttle it would red line in first and sound like it was slipping and would not shift into second, once I let off for a few and let the RPM's drop down it will either go back to normal or sometimes it will seem like it is in 3rd and the gear indicator just shows all gear highlighted (see pic). Any idea of what it could be or how bad that damage is would be greatly appreciated. I tried to search, but I'm either using the wrong search terms or just not finding the right thread. I haven't quite figured out where everything is on this forum yet.

Happened to me. That is limp mode and it typically means the transmission has lost communication with the ECU. Damage is unlikely. The problem is likely electrical. Get it to an Audi dealer.

Thanks, I was thinking it was some sort of limp mode since it goes back to normal when I restart the car. Do you remember what they had to repair/replace and how much it was roughly? The dealer here wants $160 just to look at it. I can take it easy in 1st and 2nd until I can get it repaired or save up for it.

I understand VAG-COM scanners have more capabilities, but the one I have was able to read the code and reset the CEL. I'm still looking into a VAG-COM but haven't read up enough yet to know what model I need/want.

Ross-Tech has a wiki page that list fault codes, that should help you with diagnostics. You have two problems:

First one is the transmission fluid and filter needs to be changed. Drive for 2-3k and change the fluid again. Chances are is that it has never been changed.

Second one is you're getting a low voltage fault across multiple devices. Either the battery or the alternator is going out. With the car being 10 years old, I would look at the battery.

I had this same problem on my a6 and many other people with this transmission. The solenoids go bad in the transmission and they cannot fully open the valves. It seems 2006 cars have the problem the most, maybe there was a bad batch of solenoids.

I wouldn't drive it hard until you get the slipping fixed. You will grind the clutch packs down fast.

Does the problem seem worse when the transmission is warm? 80˚C+?

Thanks JayDog747. I looked at the wiki page, but Audi terms are still like a different language compared to the ford's I'm used to working on. I'm hoping a battery and transmission flush will solve some issues.

FormulaElement did you have to pull the trans to replace the solenoids? I'm pretty mechanically inclined but I usually avoid trans work lol. The problem happens anytime my foot gets into the gas, the Temps here are over 100 degrees ferenheit. I'll have to monitor the trans temp while driving and see if it changes when it's hotter. But even right out of the driveway of I give it too much gas it will slip. Right now I just keep it below ~3500 RPMS to keep it from slipping.

Valve body and solenoids are accessible under the car when you drop the trans oil pan.

^^^^^ how much would a trans service that involved changing the solenoids run. Where can you purchase the solenoids?

When i had a maxima there was a company who would moddify the trans Valve Body to allow faster and more crisp shifts, think they were called level 10 iirc, is there a mod or service which can be done to the S4 VB to allow faster shifting???

New fluids labor and changing the solenoids would probably be around $1500+. You can do it yourself for around $900. The CTSC sells the solenoids, just make sure to get the right serial number off your transmission.

Level 10 makes valve bodies for every car pretty much. You can buy one for your S4. There are other companies also, try google.

I am currently doing the pressure overhaul kit from sonnax. I don't recommend anyone doing it unless your very mechanically inclined. The instructions arent a step by step and there is a lot of parts and pieces it doesn't even show And they will fall out when doing the overhaul.

I consider it much harder than the timing guide job....
