    Hey all,
Just got a Dolphin grey tip 04 S4 that I love. I've owned Audi's forever with multiple 4kq's, an A4, A6, and Allroad. This year of S4 is the best looking of the lot (including the new ones) imo. The RS4 is the only one that I would want above the s4. Anyways, I got it and thought it only needed coilpacks so I took a risk. It ran fine and I only say the 0300 code when I got it with the Napa scanner. Well obviously I should have Vag'd it as it now has a rough idle at a stop. It runs great otherwise and has plenty of power. I replaced all the coil packs and plugs which made no difference. I had a buddy VAG it before I did the packs and plugs and I'm hoping it's not the cam tensioner. It doesn't really rattle like I've read with other forum posts and the power is there. I also have a super squeaky front right suspension. Like bed springs in Hugh Heffners house every time you go over a bump. I order the front control arm kit and hope it's the control arms only. So a long journey is ahead of me with this car but damn it's a fun car.

Codes before the coil packs and plugs.

No I have not. My next purchase is a VAG. I have to have a friend do it each time and it's not very efficient. Can you explain why?

I just looked it up and it does say that the TBA may be needed after a battery swap. I changed the battery last week. Hmmmm?

You are going to want to get that timing code sorted out. This could be a little dangerous since you just bought it unless you got a good deal on it. It looks like the worst of the misfires are on bank 1 and are liking caused by the cam adjuster. Im not too familiar with the timing jobs on these cars but it may be possible to just replace that one adjuster without removing the motor.

Will there be enough space to get to it and then correct the timing? This may well be an issue.. But if you frequent here its nothing new.

I saw the guy on YouTube that did the cam tensioner without removing the engine. It seemed like most were in disbelief but he did it. I got the car for a great deal so putting some money into it isn't too big a deal. Did I mention I'm in love with this car anyway? :) Any of you from the Seattle area and can recommend a shop that is familiar with these cars? I'm on the Eastside but I'm more wanting it done right.
And huge thanks for the insights. I like that there is support on this site for the b6 s4's.

Just because it doesnt rattle doesn't mean that a timing issue isn't present or going to come. My car didnt really rattle until it was freezing cold day and one day my timing guide broke without warning as i was driving.was almost as if it had ran out of gas

I heard a pretty pronounced rattle on startup yesterday. It didn't stay but that was the first time I heard it since I got it. It definitely makes you cringe.

    It really doesn't
Why? cus when you buy a b6 its expected, what makes you cringe is doing the timing job and then still get a rattle after a few 100 miles.. Then also realizing your cylinders are scored.. After you consumed oil that is..
Save up, pull the motor and upgrade the timing stuff including the adjusters with jhm stuff... And since you got it cheap check your cylinder walls at the same time.. maybe if theres any scoring you could make one pull and get it all done.. then this will be all behind you.. then you could really enjoy your relationship.

Thanks for adding that. I assume that happened to you? I have been trying to figure how I'm going to attack this. I was looking at the Jhm intermediate kit. I was wondering if most shops will give you a warranty if they install the JHM stuff instead of genuine Audi parts? I'm also wondering the lifespan after its done? The upgraded kits make them last awhile I assume?

So I was looking at the injector #7 that was popping the code yesterday and trying to figure out if it was ok and whether the connections were good. Resistance was normal but the voltage was alittle higher on that plug. I was stumped. I just ordered a Vag so I figured I would just wait until I get it. Plug everything back together and the thing is idling amazing and the check engine went off!? Maybe the connector wasn't pushed down enough before? I drove it hard all over today and it hasn't popped back on and is running awesome. The question I have now is how long I should keep my fingers crossed? And damn I love how hard 2nd gear pulls.

So the check engine has popped on briefly here and there so I ordered another injector for the #7. I finally got the vag Com in the mail today so I pulled the codes. So the same 11 codes are still there from. when my buddy pulled them. I cleared all the codes and took it for a 70 mile trip out east of Seattle to see if the CEL popped on again. It ran beautifully and didn't throw any CEL. So I got home and plugged the Vag back in to see if any codes popped back on. The only one that came back was the intake flapper code. I assume 70 miles is enough to get them to show if they are going to show. The fact that the cam code or misfires didn't come back makes me think that they have been in there awhile and maybe the car already had that stuff fixed? It runs really well except for the rattle on startup. Wishful thinking maybe.
