Most cost effective way to make an your car sound louder?

I have a 09 A4 and everything right now is stock but i do want to make it sound louder. Knowing barely anything about cars, I asked my friend and he said to get a muffler delete. Is doing/getting a muffler delete the best way? Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

EDIT: apologies for the poorly written title.

Just deleting mufflers will definitely make the car louder, but wont necessarily make it sound nice and there is a good chance you will introduce drone into the cabin.

Installing a downpipe would be my first step to a louder exhaust before messing with mufflers.
If that still wasn't loud enough, I'd then change the exhaust system for similar but with a bigger diameter and slightly smaller mufflers.
If that still wasn't loud enough, only then I'd start looking at deleting mufflers.

    That's my 2c.

I agree with viceroy. I've got a test pipe and it's not much louder in the cab at idle or cruising RPMs, but is a little louder from the outside. However, when the RPMs climb, it gets nice an throaty. Well, for a 4 cylinder anyway.

but seriously, OP, it all depends on what type of loud you want. Do you want straight pipe loud? or non res DP loud?

Youtube is a good place to start with regards to sound, then check out these following exahaust companies:

Just detach the downpipe from the exhaust behind it. Easy mod, just have to loosen the connection and pull them apart. It gets loud and cost you nothing but 10 minutes of time.

    Or, the suggestion above.

A few ziners have removed the rear muffler and replaced with a straight pipe and had good results (per their postings). It also appears that removing the second resonator creates drone in the car. I have asked if anyone removed the first resonator and left the rest of the OE exhaust? I am more interested in removing weight from the front and not so much changing exhaust sounds, thought a little more/deeper sound is welcomed, but absolutely no drone for me.
    Thanks
