HELP! Video inside A4 quattro, tiptronic Will not engage any gear after trim swap

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Alright guys, I have a 2006 B7 quattro, 2.0t tiptronic. Car was working perfectly fine today.. I bought some B6 S4 seats as well as some silver trim(I had the brown fake wood trim) recently.. Anyhow today I swapped the seats(I did not swap the bladder module from the passenger seat yet. ) was just putting the seats in to see how they look.

Also swapped the silver trim.. Got to the the ash tray and struggled removing it.. SO i thought I would start the car, put it in gear to get more clearance.. Anyhow I started the car and I cannot select any gear.. Foot is on the brake, no gear selection..

Any ideas why? could i have disturbed a plug when removing the center trim/ash tray trim? The airbag light is on(which I expected from the passenger seat not having the pressure (bladder) installed.. Could that have made my car go into pissed off, you can't drive me mode??.. any ideas!? thanks ahead of time.

Alright guys, I looked at the solenoid and it appears to be fine. I unplugged and replugged.. no luck, I made a video to see if anyhow has any further ideas.

I think the (solenoind for selector lock-n110 ) is the issue... apparently it can be removed without further issues, does anyone know how to remove it?

Normally, You can turn the key on and press the brake pedal then shift the trans out of Park without starting the engine. You should be able to hear the shift lock solenoid actuating the shift lock as you press and release the brake pedal. With the ign key ON, engine Not running, Can you confirm that you hear the solenoid actuating and releasing when you press and release the brake pedal?

Ok, so after some further testing.. I'm 99% sure the solenoid is clicking.. The light on the transmission that signals the brake is pressed also goes off. and the brake lights come on when brake pedal is pressed.

As far as the override button I do not see one anywhere. Do you have a picture? I've tried removing the #31 fuse.. I also checked the engine fuses, no fuse issues..

I've tried to remove the car from park in off position, on position, as well as ACC or in between position.. Still nothing.. :(
The car worked 100% fine before the seat and trim install.. With an automatic car, could the airbag light from no passenger side seat pressure bladder make the car go into limp or non-drivable mode?

I'm going to remove the passenger seat tomorrow and see.

The shift lock solenoid can be removed from the shifter assembly without removing the shifter.

    >Remove selector lever handle.

    Remove selector mechanism cover - 1 - .

Disconnect electrical harness connector on Shift Lock Solenoid N110 .

Press retaining hooks - A - into shift mechanism - arrow - and hold it down.

    Note:

If retaining hook - A - is broken off, selector mechanism function unit must be replaced.

Tip Shift Lock Solenoid N110 down and out in direction of - arrow - so that ball head - 1 - disengages from operating lever on shift mechanism.

Remove Shift Lock Solenoid N110 .

    Installing

Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:

Rotate ball head - 1 - to correct installation position.

Guide Shift Lock Solenoid N110 diagonally from above into shift mechanism.

Tip Shift Lock Solenoid N110 down in opposite direction of - arrow - .

Ball head - 1 - must be completely engaged in operating lever on shift mechanism.

Secure Shift Lock Solenoid N110 with the retaining hook - A - .

    Install selector mechanism cover - 1 - .

    Install selector lever handle. <

I could not find any info about the shift lock override button, it is likely you can simply operate the solenoid manually. However, if something else is holding the shifter in Park, that may not help.

Thanks for the info diagnosticator. it's possible I pushed or pulled the area of the shifter too hard and broke or dislodged the solenoid. As it sounds like it is actuating.

Can I run the car without the solenoid until I can get a New one? I don't care about a code. Just need the car to be able to drive!

I'm changing the timing chain/tensioner in my Mini cooper s.. So I'm down to driving my stripped out (no A/C)E85 tuned, big turbo'd Evo 8.. Lol and I have to drive well over 100 miles a day for work.

Ok, I removed the shift lock solenoid. It is 100% working. (made a couple videos, uploading now) Replaced the solenoid. Car will still not move out of park with or without solenoid installed.

With the solenoid removed, can you reach in and disengage the shift lock mechanism manually? That is, manually moving the shift lock mechanism in the shifter assembly the same way the solenoid does?

With the solenoid removed, the shift lock mechanism in the shifter is in the locked position. The solenoid energizes to move the shift lock mechanism to the unlocked position. You should be able to move the mechanism manually without the solenoid installed, and move the shifter out of Park. If you can't manually move the shift lock mechanism toward the unlocked position, or the shifter lever won't move out of Park after manually unlocking the shift lock mechanism, something else is jambing the shifter. Something must have fallen into the shifter and is causing the shifter to jamb.

The shift lever lock released by the button in the shift knob, is a separate but possibly cooperative function of the solenoid actuated shifter lever lock.

If you can't unlock the shift lock manually, then you will most likely need to remove the shifter assembly and determine what is jambing the shifter. Or, replace the shifter assembly with a used known to be working properly shifter assembly.

    IMPORTANT!

If the shift knob is not installed correctly, and the release button in the knob does not release the shift lever, you can't move the shift lever out of Park even with the shift lock solenoid working right with the brake pedal pressed.

    3. Check locking button on selector lever handle

Check locking button for ease of movement:

It must be possible to press the locking button without great force.

After releasing, the locking button must come all the way back out by itself

If specified values are not obtained:

Check whether selector lever handle is installed correctly.

Check whether selector rod or selector lever is bent.

    Function test:

    The ignition is switched on.

Locking button on selector lever handle must be pressed for the following shifts. If it is not pressed, the selector lever cannot be shifted into the specified position.

"P" to "R" and also press brake pedal

    "D" to "S"

"N" to "R" ; in standstill, also press brake pedal after long wait

    "R" to "P"

If specified values are not obtained:

Check whether selector lever handle is installed correctly.

    Adjust selector lever cable.

Refer to Selector Lever Cable, Checking and Adjusting (Through VIN 8E_8A 002699)

Refer to Selector Lever Cable, Checking and Adjusting (From VIN 8E_8A 002700)<

Therefore, if the shift lever is not properly released when the button on the shift knob is pressed, the shift lever won't move out of Park. The shift knob and release button must be assembled wrong.

    Selector Lever Handle
    Removing

Place selector lever in position "D" .

Turn sleeve - 1 - counter-clockwise all the way and then slide it downward.

Carefully pull the lock button on the selector lever handle - 2 - out of the handle - 3 - until a cable tie can be inserted between the lock button and the selector lever.

    Note:

Do not pull the lock button further out of the selector lever handle otherwise the handle will be damaged.

Secure lock button in pulled-out position using cable tie - arrow - as shown in illustration.

Pull selector lever handle upward and off.

    Installing

Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:

Place selector lever in position "D" .

    Note:

To install new selector lever handle - 3 - , the lock button - 2 - must be pulled out as far as stop and secured with a cable tie - arrow - or using assembly aid included with new handle.

If the button was not secured, it must not be pulled out from the handle using mechanical aids. Apply compressed air gun to bottom of handle and carefully press button out with compressed air.

Mount handle - 3 - onto the selector lever completely - the lock button on the handle - 2 - faces the driver.

When doing this, handle must engage into ring groove of the selector lever.

Remove cable tie - arrow - or assembly aid, the button mechanism engages into the vertical groove on selector lever.

The lock button must move by itself in the handle.

    Note:

The button does not move, then the handle is not installed correctly.

Pull sleeve - 1 - upward and lock it by turning it clockwise.

Check the function of the lock button in the selector lever handle 3. Check locking button on selector lever handle

I am able to move the shift lock piece back and forth with the solenoid removed. The solenoid doesn't move very far So it appears that in doing in manually I'm fully able to retract it all the way.

Still no luck. I messed up after troubleshooting. With the shifter when I tried to reinstall it incorrectly.

Its possible the shifter wasn't engaging from the button. But I removed the shift knob so to speak and pulled on the reminder of the shift assembly and still wouldn't budge from park.

I'm going to purchase a whole shift assembly and replace it. After I borrow a friends vagcom to see if there are any codes being thrown today.

I suspect that the shift knob button is not engaged with the shift lever release vertical rod correctly, even with the key ON and the brake pedal pressed, if the lever release button is not working right, then the shift lever can't be moved out of Park. Make sure you use the instructions above for removing and reinstalling the shift knob and button.

I recommend getting a one day subscription to Audi erwin, it's about $35, and you can download and print as much of the service information that you want during the 24 hours access. For this job, you need the 6 speed auto trans housing and controls section.

I think that goes to the ignition switch. I think i saw it when i was stripping my donor car down. Not 100% sure tho.

Yeah, that is the ignition key lock cable. It locks the key in the ignition switch unless the shifter is in Park, then the key can be removed from the ign switch. The service manual describes how to adjust it.
