Figured I'd bring this thread back to life. I've owned a B6 Ultra sport 6spd quattro for ten years and am finally thinking to upgrade. I found a 2012 S line 6spd Black Optics that I currently have on hold waiting for a test drive at Carmax. Before I found this car I talked to every Audi dealer in my area on S4s and the service was absolute garbage. Couldn't get people to return calls, emails-and when they did it was utter incompetence. I have bought cars from Carmax before and it's really a simple experience. The burden is 100% on the buyer to do their research and vet the cars, so I highly recommend buying from them if you know the car you want and are willing to do some research. The car I am looking at was a one owner car, 26k mileage, Black Pearl, S Line, Sport, Black Optics, MMI, etc. I couldn't find a car like this at Audi CPO locally to save my life.
I really wanted to upgrade to an S4 but the cost is still too high on the 2012s. This is the next best thing and has half the mileage of the S4s I could barely afford at best. So checking this car out soon and might sell my Ultra sport, which is rare in its own right. 04, Brilliant Red on Black. 6spd 1.8T Quattro...never modded. I definitely notice that if you watch closely enough, you can find amazing cars at Carmax not available at dealers easily. And often times these cars are gems, one owner cars that you just don't see elsewhere. There are also deceptive cars, but you have to vet those cars carefully. Call a dealer and see if you can have them pull the service records, spot things that say modded like missing badges, aftermarket wheels, grills, etc. If you are an enthusiast you can spot this stuff easier than other people without too much effort.
Only downside is no CPO warranty extension, so you have to look at a different extended warranty or buy their MaxCare warranty (which I've heard decent things about). Also, my current car was CPO and while it was worth it to me then, sort of, not sure CPO carries that same weight with me these days. Audi denied many fixes for me back in the day and I'll never forget that. I have a great shop for maintenance and if the MaxCare covers anything big at an Audi dealer with an acceptable deductible, then not much risk overall. On my other Mercedes from Carmax, they let me know that often times they will actually take your car to the dealer for service under their extended warranty themselves. So if you have an issue and it's warranty, Carmax will take the car over to the brand for work. It just takes longer and often times you can request it as well. That said, you just never know. Really have to Research research research when buying any used car, even at dealers ;).
