    High pitched whine/Dentist drill sound

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have already gotten a few opinions in the IBS thread but decided to make a thread for the other people. Basically about 2 days after my battery relocation (could be totally unrelated), my car started making this high pitched sound, like a dentist drill. Also sometimes (mainly when raining or has been raining) the alternator belt or belt tensioner makes a whirling sound (could be unrelated). I have checked the turbo and it is fine, I have also revved the engine with me standing in front of it and could not hear it, but I can hear it if I rev from the cabin, which makes me doubt the belt tensioners. The sound is rpm dependent, not speed or boost. It also becomes slightly louder when A/C is on.

Here's a quick video of the sound, hard to hear but it's the really high pitched sound.

I plan to unplug my gauges and radio tomorrow to see if maybe the power cable is interfering with the radio.

I was going to say it very well could be interference with the electrical in the car. Since I started doing stereo installs, I was always told to keep the power cable away from the rca's and speaker wires because it could interfere.

It does sound like electrical interference, but I doubt you'd hear it with the radio off.

Do you know if the sound is coming from the speakers?

Do you have the stock amplified speakers? If so the electrical interference theory could still be plausible even with the stereo off. Try sticking your head next to a speaker while it's revved.

Did not have time to pull the fuses today, but basically I have the stock setup for the audio except just changing a couple speakers out (same bose amp), and a headunit. My power cable for my battery runs up over the back seat, down under the carpet, up through the ECU box. I didn't really consider keeping it away from speaker wires, but most people say it's only a problem with RCA's for amps/subs which I don't have. I've also been told to try a different ground for the battery.

Agreee, different ground may help. Any unshielded wire can pick up interference. Cheap rca and standard stranded copper, (used for speakers) are susceptible to it.

So I pulled the fuse for the radio today, and not only did the dentist drill sound go away, but also the high pitched-sound that began when I installed my wideband. So the noises are definitely coming from the speaking, and only when the radio is turned on. Because of the fact that the noise is present when listening to radio or bluetooth, I don't think an antenna noise filter will help. I also don't really think an alternator noise filter will help (maybe for the dentist drill-but not the wideband). And I don't think I use RCA's (does the stock radio setup use them?) since I don't have aftermarket subs/amp. Sooooo what exactly can I do?

Put that battery back where it belongs. It's clearly upset with you.

Just got off the phone with crutchfield, they said many early bose systems (like ours) get mad when you put an aftermarket headunit in and have any sort of interference. He recommened 2 of these:

Would of recommended that same thing.

I thought you had the stock head unit. No?

Na I have a kenwood something. No subs or anything, I'm not big into audio, I just wanted something that had bluetooth

The problem with things like this, is they are a band-aid, and not an ideal solution.
Your problem would be a ground loop somewhere. Properly fixing the issue would require finding and fixing the ground loop.

Bose stuff is pretty dumb for grounding. In my car I originally wanted to use the stock Bose amp for the speakers but couldn't get rid of the ground loop and resulting speaker whine. Ended up running my RCA cables (away from power cable) to an aftermarket amp and no more speaker whine.

When it comes to grounds, you want a solid and very short connection. If your battery is in the trunk, your ground should be there as well.

Probably not an ideal solution, but if it fixes the issue and has no effect on anything else then it is good enough for me. We will see

My ground atm is about 18" away on a solid spot. I doubt it's the ground but that will be the next thing to change if the filters don't help

18" isn't that far, I was suggesting if it was still in the engine compartment, you should move it back. You may simply have to route your positive cable another way(away from speaker wires). Then there is wire shielding, but that gets very expensive!

i had to install ground loop isolators with my pioneer headunit coupled with the S8 bose amp. I was getting all kids of weird noises and they made them go away
