    RS5 Down Payment

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm going to be purchasing a used 2014 Audi RS5 soon. I was just curious how much of a down payment you guys put down or what your trade in was when you got your RS5? Also what type of monthly payment can I expect? Thanks

Not sure you are taking the right approach here. Monthly payment is how dealers like to sell things because they can manipulate the situation, so instead, you should be asking what fair market value is for a specific car.

I'll humor you any way, though, and say that you should put down 15-20% as a rule of thumb. That can be in the form of cash or trade in. You should also look at what your credit score is to get an idea of what rate you qualify for. Hopefully you are "well qualified" given you are looking at spending ~$60-70k on a vehicle, in which case you should be finding an interest rate around 2% on a used vehicle. If it's higher than this, then I would suggest putting down a higher down payment.

I always find myself putting together spreadsheet which I can manipulate while negotiating. But there is one thing I always keep an eye on and that is how much do I ultimately end up paying for the car, taking into account interest and down payment.

I find it slightly odd that you're buying an RS 5 yet you're not financially/mathematically savvy enough to figure out what your monthly payment would be...

It's not a matter of being financially/mathematically savvy enough to figure out what my monthly payment would be. I know it will depend on my down payment amount, my credit, and what interest rate I get. I was just wanting to know from you guys that have been through the process of what to expect or what vehicle you traded in. But thanks anyway. I know not everyone put down 20% or had a trade in valued at more or less than that amount.

I would say put at least half down. with a 72K Base and option that can easily make it 80K.. $40K will let you have a better interest rate and slightly better monthly payments. Did you want to purchase or lease? Audi dont really tend to lease (look pretty) on paper. Buy used :D IT IS THE SAME CAR

Got 20 for my trade in then I down another 20, and financed the remaining half. I'm paying $600/mo for 72mos.

good luck but remember that you are financing something that depreciates. A good rule of thumb is to make sure that at any time you can sell the car to pay it off. I found that at the end of each year I had to put a bit more in to make sure that my balance would match at least the mid blue book value.

Thanks that was the info I was looking for. I won't have a trade in because I would like to keep my old vehicle since it's paid off and I don't plan on making the RS5 my daily driver especially here in the brutal midwest winters where I live. Geez 40K down that's alot but a $600 payment would be nice.

I know these are all wheel drive but do any of you know how they hold up in the snow? Or is it just best to keep it garaged up during the winter months?

This is why I hate these threads, what works for the goose doesn't work for the gander. I would pay cash for the car if interest rates were 10%, and at 6% I would have a much heavier down payment than what I put down for mine, but at 1.8% interest, you're not being "smart" to sink all of your money into a depreciable asset when you could easily be making more elsewhere.

@namvar has the right idea with interest rates the way they are now

In the end you should do what makes financial sense to you.

I agree with some of the folks on here...you're doing it backwards....figure out what you can afford to pay and then back into it.

I paid cash (for my lowly used S5...) as I believe in owning cars outright and not borrowing money for them...and we'll see if I stick to my own beliefs when it comes time to getting wifey her car...

Car buying is easy as you basically know all the numbers going in...you know the interest rate, you know the price, you know how much you have to put down/trade in and again, most importantly, you know what YOU feel comfortable paying every month. The last one is all that really matters. Math doesn't lie...don't try and trick yourself into changing the last number so you can have a car...will bite you in the ass at the end of the day.

Google "auto loan calculator." Then plug in the numbers and see what you get.

Quite frankly, if $40K down and $600/month sound high because of the math, then you're calculations should tell you if that is right or not. On the other hand, if it sounds high because "Geez, that is a lot of money," then you likely can't afford the car.

Just wait till the $200 oil change and $1,000 plus major service.

Audi has a loan calculator on their site when you configure the car it even adjusts to options you choose during the build

No $heet. Ain't that hard to do:

Purchase price - down payment/trade value + TTL = balance due.

Balance due X interest rate X length of loan = monthly payment.

There are even finance calculator mobile apps that you can install on your smartphone so you can instantly input the numbers. The only three numbers that really matter are interest rate, final sale price, and length of loan.

Fixed that for you...kind of. That's the simplified version at least. Otherwise you get into amortization schedules and other bs for compounding interest.

Too many rules, ya can't camp anywhere except in designated spots where you get to meet all the people you were trying to get away from in the first place, then your gas prices make nearly Europe seem affordable, and... but do have the metric system so it's not a total loss :)

    This!
its a 80k car, so 600$ aint a lot. If that feels a lot, then this isn't the right car for you. But since you are buying used, you can get away with lower DP and lower payments.
If I were you, I would plonk about 30-40% down with low interest rate and to make sure your head is always above water. To me, paying cash doesn't make sense with 1.99% interest rate but to each, his own.
