I don't see how you can't tell, personally. I haven't seen anything fake that is so good it looks real.

I think he wasn't referring to wrapped things.

Some parts only have a layer or two of carbon on top for aesthetics, and are not really all carbon. (Of course, some parts can't really be made with ONLY carbon because of how many layers it would take to keep it rigid. Ex. Splitters, roof panels.)

Light the part on fire. If it is fake then the part will be gone and there will only be ash and maybe some melted plastic. If it is real the part will be gone and there will be ash and Carbon fiber strands left.

Actually many splitters are made of CF and so are some roofs. (BMW M3/M6/Z4M all have CF roofs) That's the whole point of Carbon Fiber...Lightweight and super strong.
Carbon Fabrics come in different weights for different purposes. A heavier weight fabric would be used for a structural piece so that you did not need as many layers.

IE aftermarket hoods, trunks and such are usually fiberglass cores with a 3K 2x2 twill or plain weave carbon fiber outer layer. This is to make the AFFORDABLE.
Where as a SOLID carbon hood, or a monocoque frame would be made of a 12K weight carbon And very expensive.
