Just picked up my first a4 and am eager to get it back into good shape. Got it for a steal and figured it would make a great project car. The only issues that I am aware of are the body panels, specifically the trunk, rear bumper, passenger mirror, windshield, left quarter panel, and left door. Mechanically the car is fine. I will get some pictures up as the project begins.

Alright so since I got the whole car for 1k and it runs great/looks bad because of body work that leaves me a lot of finacial room for tinkering.

Besides the cosmetic fixes I will be lowering the car slightly about 1-2in fitting 17 or 18in wheels. Brake upgrades of course along with coilovers. Built engine and Trans. Custom intercooled pes g1 supercharger with a higher boost pulley. Goal is about 350-450 whp.

    All Over!

    Sounds like an interesting project.

350-450whp sounds very, very optimistic. 450chp is more feasible, but not easy to attain either. I haven't come across a 2.8 PES G1'd making a reliable 400chp, but that doesn't mean it isn't possible.

You'll need deep pockets, deep enough to net you a decent B5 S4 once you're done. Good reliable power out of the box, nicer interior and more performance oriented brakes and suspension.

All the best of luck, no doubt this will be a fun project to delve into. And remember, we love pictures, even stock ones.

Ive read a bunch of people saying that the s4 is easier to go for instead of working on these cars. However based of the hassle of trying to find one where I am at (NC) and the fact that I my a4 cost me $1000 I would much rather use the difference in price to upgrade my current car. I dont have the money to throw into a down payment all at once so upgrading when I can is the most reasonable option for me. As far as the engine goes I feel like hp goal might be easier to obtain in my case cost wise. I have a friend that works in an auto parts store and is willing to apply his discounts to my project. Internal upgrades I have found range from stroker cranks, forged pistons and rods. billet cams etc. The originality of the project is one of my main goals and I like yourself have only seen the 2.8s with a basic g1 or g2 supercharger system. Adding those other parts ontop of that would be very interesting and a different power delivery compared to the biturbo 2.7 in the s4.

Don't do it man, hate to burst any dreams but I'd hate to have you invest all your time and money. If you want it just for simplicity or to go a different direction then go for it, what is nice is the cleanliness of the system when supercharging a 2.8L, with no piping, dv's, n75's, boost controllers, etc, etc.

But when it comes to performance, power, there's no and I mean no comparison.

And comparison against what? A 100% stock 1.8T with the general goodies, a bolt in equal length tubular manifold and a small baby GT2871r Eliminator (baby version) destroys a supercharged 2.8L, there is zero and I mean zero comparison vs a 1.8T, not alone an S4. You'd only do it to be different, but don't expect to be powerful and forget those hp numbers not going to happen or even if you dumped ridiculous amounts of money the powerband will be so bland and linear and offer no punch, aside from the launch, but then just goes back to being a slug. The 2.8L V6 is literally thee worst VAG motor ever built, ever! Even a 2.0 8V is a much better motor (I've been talking performance wise, not reliability wise as there are no known bad apple VAG motors).

Just saving you the effort , you'd do it just to be different, not for performance.

Well thats just sad. Seems like i bought the wrong car then. How out of question would the 2.7L s4 swap be.

Lower it, throw on some rims and maybe an exhaust and just use the car. For what you can get S4's for, imho get an S4 as you get S4 everything opposed to having a 2.7tt in an A4 with all the work and still really gave a A4 as there's so much more an S4 has.

Ya that's true. An entire swap might be much but It would be fun. I have read the 2.8 heads could bolt up to the 2.7 short block, is there any truth to this? If so that would be extremely cost effective given I find a block or doner parts car.

Yes, 2.8 heads are well used on 2.7tts.

Don't forget to replace the valves on the 2.8 heads. They'll get super hot and melt if you don't

What does a set of 2.8 heads go for usually?

If you want to be weird, you can be one a the few guys to have a stripped A4 and RWD.... Or swap a V8 in it. That has become popular lately.

Well now the plan is to replace rods and pistons along with valves, s4 intake manifold and wire harness. and I found a local shop that can single turbo the car for a good deal. I confirmed with a tech at 034 that the 2.8 engine with a built bottom end can handle a good amount of power. If I wanted 800 plus then I would need the s4 engine block because of the 4 bolt mains on the crank. There are practically no s4/a6 engines in my area and I don't want to pay the shipping for one hence this route with the project.
