    Advice needed : 2012 A6 3.0T - " Add oil, max 1 qt. You may continue driving"

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi All,

I bought my car in December at around 48k miles and it's right now at 51300 odd. As per the car fax, a fresh oil change had been made prior to purchase.

I had dropped off my car at the local dealership to address the factory recalls and I picked it up on Wednesday Evening. Thursday morning I got this message "Add oil, max 1 qt. You may continue driving". Was this a coincidence with me leaving the car at the dealer?

Need some expert advice on the timing of this. Should I contact the dealer? Or just address it myself?

    Thanks!

Absolutely just a coincidence. Just add 1 quart of oil and you'll be good to go.

The dealer didn't extract oil. However the car does burn oil. I'm 8.8k miles after 1st 5k oil change and have already had the dealer add one quart. I'm now 1/2 quart low again. Looks like a quart every 5k miles. This is IMHO unacceptable.

I had the same issue. Dealer kept records of adding oil ( I called ea time I did) so when I finally complained at a major service they replaced a valve, IIRC it is suppose to separate oil vapors from actual oil. When it isn't working properly you will burn excessive oil. It is a known issue. I am now 8K since the last change and the oil level hasn't moved.

What valve did they replace if you know? This could be a potential solution to the oil burning issues.

Other threads have suggested that oil burning might be due to conservative break-in. The pistons do not settle well if you follow the manual's recommendation for break-in.
My S4 with the 3.0T was a dealer loaner, so it was driven hard since day one, and it does not burn any oil.

I had hoped driving hard would help. If anything it's increased the consumption. I now have 14k miles on the car.

There is a campaign currently on most 2012 models, 24AP, gets you updated thermostat, fuel rails, and crank case breather valve along with a software update. This will rectify your oil consumption issue. Call a dealership, provide them your vin, and they will be able to see if the campaign applies to your vehicle. If you'd like PM me your vin, and I can check for you.

I'd contact the dealer. I have 53k miles and have never had to add oil.

Don't worry, I probably test drove your car before you bought it and it should be fine ;)

I broke my B8 with the 3.0 TFSI using the moto method which includes, among other suggestions, lots of negative compression breaking to properly set the rings.

I sold that car at 150,000 miles and never had to add a drop of oil.

I spoke to the advisor who handled my recall last week, and he said a message for a quart after 3000 miles from the previous oil change is normal and he would look into it if it happened more often (every 700-800 miles).

So can I use just about any 5W-40 fully synthetic?
