    EDL and Standalone

I'm getting very close to completing my VR6 powered A4, and it has got me thinking about the S4 drivetrain that is in the car. I started with a 1998 A4 2.8 Quattro and from what I can tell from research is that all B5 A4 and S4s have the electronic differential lock built into the ABS system. What I'm wondering is now that I'll be on custom standalone to run the motor will the EDL still be active since the ABS system is still intact? If it is active is the EDL going to cause problems if I ever try to launch the car at the track? I've searched on this topic but I can't find any info about EDL and using standalone ECU. Also as far as I can tell this b5 I have does not have any traction control, but I would imagine that would be gone because of the standalone. Any info is greatly appreciated.

I am currently running VEMS and will give you a quick run down on my experience with just the ABS system.

I'm a '00 A4 1.8T with a 3076 and VEMS. I had my ABS module rebuilt after I had my car returned with the original AEM standalone installed. The car wasn't even close to running. Since I was lazy, I removed the entire ABS pump/module and sent it off to be rebuilt. Fast forward 2 years and I had brake issues. Since I am standalone, you can't communicate with the ABS module to recode it. I removed the pump, module and paired with T fittings.

I'm still fine tuning my brake system by shortening the brake booster rod. I should see a constant 2psi on the calipers but since I don't have a gauge, I can't tell where she sits once heated.

I know this didn't answer your question, but saying to keep your abs in tack and leave it be. I have a custom harness built for my car so it wasn't like I could swap out my Lugtronic VEMS to Stock ECU to make a quick fix.

To help you better, you'll have to tell us what specific brand/model of standalone engine management you'll be using. A lot of newer standalone systems come with CAN functionality.

That doesn't really matter though since pre-00 manual B5s didn't come with any sort of CAN bus, not even powertrain. As far as I know EDL is fully self-contained inside the ABS unit and doesn't have any external inputs and outputs.

From my research, that appears to be the case, especially with the older B5's. And just for more information I will be running VEMS (lugtronic), on a custom harness for the VR.

So if the EDL is fully contained in the ABS, it should be functional, but how does it affect guys trying to launch the car?

What makes you think you have it?? I don't think the older ones have it in the ABS at all. Maybe it was there in the brains but not used.
I'm early 99 b5 (with no EDL,) with VEMS ......no brake issues, and no issues communicating with the ABS module . Launching no problem, Launch control on vems no problem either.
Wouldn't putting the early B5 type ABS system in the later B5 solve the issue people have with EDL interfering with the brakes with standalone??

With VEMS from lugtronic configured the ecu to use the vehicle speed sensor . You can see road speed, have boost by gear and launch control with it. You'll prolly have it on yours too. Best money I spent out of all the higher priced purchases. You can add an E85 flex fuel sensor and configure it too for cheap!!!!!
