I use this stuff which you can buy at any VW or Audi dealership. OEM stuff they use on oil pans and rear main seals.

The one shown in the picture is the correct one for gaskets; silicone sealant. Is any major difference between the OEM and the commonly used Permatex? I see that the OEM can only withstand up to
200 degrees Celsius whereas Permatex 260 celsius.

Any high temp, chemical resistant gasket sealant works. Buying the OE stuff is like wiping with cash after you take a dump.

Lol, I just realized that when I searched the Audi Part # on FCPEuro, and came across the OES, https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/vw-...sket-d176404a2
Literally half the price. Just got off the phone with FCPEuro and was told that little to No Sealant is required on the Valve Cover Gaskets. I'll reserve my purchase of this Dirko when its time for me to swap the transmission fluid

Purchased Victor Reinz for around $8, free shipping. Will be useful in other areas.
It seems Victor Reinz and Elring are both OEM to a variety of gaskets and seals to these German Automotive Manufacturers
Elring is Red, whereas Victor Reinz is Gray like the Audi OEM which sells for more than 2x the cost, haha

Audi does this with practically every product they sell....

I used Hondabond HT on my lower oil pan, no leaks so far.

Oops, I meant the color of the tip of the tube (I always thought that indicated the color of the sealant). At the end of the day, these sealants are made in virtually the same factory but distributed through various brands and channels.

We are having an entirely too lengthy discussion about RTV sealant. While some might be made in the same place and some may not, they all essentially work the same, hold up just as long and are made out of the same stuff as the others. It's all a matter of how much money you want to burn.

The Permatex RTV is not the same as the OEM Sealant. As far as I understand, the OEM Sealant doesn't harden over time, whereas the Ultra Black RTV by Permatex hardens.

Permatex doesn't harden completely either. Its RTV silicone, same as the OEM stuff. I have never had an issue with permatex. Like I said man, you make way, way too much of a fuss over OE stuff. Next you'll be buying fuses from the dealer. As long as the RTV is high temp and oil resistant it will do the same thing.

Lol, you got me there; you're absolutely right. I was going to buy fuses from the dealer sometime in the near future

I had horrible experiences dealing with non-OEM stuff when I was dealing with '2' Volvo's; from water pump failures to oil pump leaks, and much more; its perhaps as a result of me trying to be cheap when sourcing parts. Now, I try to stay away from Autozone and Advance Auto as much as possible. The fuses are darn cheap there and very much the same as where these car manufacturers source their fuses from.

I've read some comments, someone had mentioned that the Permatex Ultra Black will have to be scrapped off when going for the next Valve Gasket Cover Replacement. Not sure if this is entirely accurate though. Some favor the idea of applying sealant in areas which are not really needed.

The OE stuff has to be scraped off as well. All RTV will as it all hardens into a rubber like compound.

I must have come across a specific thread, some favoring one sealant over the other, vice versa; must have stirred mixed reaction from my end.
Another point someone mentioned was the Permatex takes up to 24 hours to cure, whereas the OE takes somewhere around 9 to up to 48 hours to completely cure as per the spec sheet.

Thanks Brandon for clarifying these details, much appreciated.

Quick question on the Audi sealant. How long are you letting it sit before torquing down the lower pan? I'm using it for a lower oil pan re-seal.

I am a huge fan of Permatex's new product The Right Stuff. It is there newest product and a significant improvement over ultra grey and ultra black.

Honda bonds is also very good. The OE Audi stuff that dries white seems sort of crappy in my opinion.
