Finally a cold air intake for the C5

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
As all C5 4.2 owners know all to well, there's not much out there for engine mods and go fast goodies. I've been looking for a long time for a cold air intake, and finally i have found one. Im sure some of you have heard of the company before, BMC, (not the bicycle racing team), they make this beautiful carbon dynamic airbox that took a couple of enjoyable hours to install. It makes our engine bay look so much cleaner, getting rid of all that plastic shit, so when you pop the hood, you can actually be proud of what is there. I've only had it on for two days now, but what i can say is that the car has a definite increase to throttle response, and where i seem to notice it the most so far, is the low end tourque, alot more there. I don't know what the gains are, but thay are noticable, so finally something for our forgotten platform. For $300.00, it's worth every penny, i'll post the part # if people are interested, and get some pics up soon.

Having a 2.7t myself, know little about NA 4.2, but isn't S6 and A6 4.2 have different intakes? Also reducing restriction on NA engine, while adding some top end power (high rpm), may cost you torque on low rpm. I used to own 2.8 A4 years ago, and definitely experienced loss of torque after ditching airbox, and switching to large cone air filter.

The ONLY reason why one might want to do HAI (Hot Air Intake) is when you have a turbo/supercharged car that REALLY suffers from inferior filter flow. Like using stock airbox on tial 770 turbos that make 3x factory power and thus can literally collapse intake tubes with restrictive filter.

I have to see the pics of your set up but I have a feeling that like most of them, the intake now sucks hot air (hence "HAI") from engine bay and you will actually develop less power now due to lowered air density. In this situation, stock set up should actually be properly named "CAI", oh irony .

This CAI does not grab air from the engine bay,( not a HAI), it has a ducting pipe which i ran just below the headlight assembly, the car has gains in HP and TQ for sure!. I will try to upload some pics, but i'm just not to savy on how to get it from my phone to this site, hints welcome.

Loosing any torque on the 2.8 is bad

Given that the stock air box already flows far more than an otherwise stock NA 4.2 can use, and that air comes from outside the car (through the snorkel bolted to the top cross member on the upper rad support), I don't see any way that an aftermarket CAI could improve your performance. My guess is your increased hp and tq numbers are far more butt dyno placebo than actual real world increases but it would still be interesting to see this intake.

To me it looks out of place and not as clean as stock, but to each there own. If you happy with it that's all that matters.

Hey brandon, i have had this car for 15 yrs and 290km, i know it very well, the improvement is noticable and it is a great bang for the buck, you know, i put this out there for the guys who have my platform because there's not much out there for our application, so to finally find something that bolts on is great. I take it that you have the same engine, and you have done this to your engine?, if not, you don't have a clue to what your talking about.

The web site is, BMC Air filters, once threr, click on, "Air filter systems", select , CDA- Carbon dynamic airbox, and the first kit you will see is the ACCDA 100-150, that is the kit for these engines, you just need to measure your MAF for the right dia.

Well it looks like the list is long this year, urgh, i think i have to replace the oil cooler hose, which is a bitch, lift the motor a few inches to get access to a fourty dollar part, that will eatup a weekend, then i got a few other cells to address and, so needless to say the old girl is starting to show her age, but i still love her.

It's a placebo... Go put the car on a dyno and I'll bet you see a reduction in torque and little if any increase in power.

Hahaha, so true of almost every aftermarket inake I have ever seen. The worst one is the APR for the 4.2, it doesn't even fit together properly. This one at least fits well it seems. Looks however, well to each their own, I think it's ugly.
