    150. It was on an abandoned air strip...yeah, that's the ticket...an abandoned air strip.

...in Oklahoma, where the potholes are so big the radio station skips.

Not sure I would trust road quality in Mexico to go that fast. One pothole and thats all she wrote. Literally.

Straight 130 (to the governor) on Autobahnen, but...

And since it was legal, I got a bunch of opportunities to run it up near there and then one to peg it at the governed 130 MPH. Bottom line, it is really NOT a vehicle to be driven that fast, even where legal and with little to very light traffic and top roads. Up to about 110-115, yes, an we repeatedly had it to that for longer runs. At or above that the hood was shaking from the turbulence just for starters---somewhat comical actually. Much more vulnerable to wind by those speeds, no surprise with the slab sides. Then as you went in the 115-130 range it got somewhat white knuckle even on the broadest of sweepers. Keep in mind these are the Autobahnen engineered with the most modest of curves on unlimited sections compared to anything you will find in the U.S. Thus only in essentially straight line did it feel comfortable to run it up to 130; hard even in Germany to find these days. We had better luck in the East.

Bottom line, this was fine for any possible speeds in North America, even highly extra legal. Autobahn uber cruiser, nope. I would use the A8 for that easily over the top heavy, very slabby Q5.

    Oh...yeah...I wouldn't try that in a regular Q5.
The SQ5 is limited to 155 MPH and can do every bit of it.

What makes the SQ5 handle better than the Q5 at high speeds?

Doesn't the Q5 and SQ5 share the same chassis and suspension?

The SQ5 has a higher top speed governor, and different drivetrain( Tiptronic in Europe, which is provided to Q5s and SQ5s in the U.S. ) but that is the only difference that I am aware of and a drivetrain will provide very minimal better handling at higher speeds.

A stock Q5 is designed for comfort. That's why they are limited to a lower top speed.
    I'm just saying I don't think I'd want to be white-knuckling it at 155 MPH in a stock Q5.
Now a Q5 with a modified suspension, maybe...just sayin'. Didn't mean to get your panties in a bunch.

OK, but what makes the SQ5 with stock suspension provide better handling than a stock Q5, like you stated?

A tune will remove a governor, so top speedss are irrelevant to me. I'm curious what makes the SQ5 handle better than a Q5 at those higher speeds if both are stock? I haven't found any difference between the Q5's and SQ5's chassis , have you?

    Yes, but not a U.S. SQ5

As you probably know, SQ5 is same basic ride height for U.S. market. I looked at the parts listings extensively for mods like sway bars and even cross platform for height type tweaks with OE parts, but on US side it netted to basically the same. Typically same tire widths and sizing if you get to better equipped ones, at least up to 20's. Not talking aftermarket, and doesn't matter if governor is 155 on stock set up (as are all S's typically) except for the straight line. It isn't dropped like they (or the Hybrids for that matter) are in Europe. I saw them there, including at Ingolstadt in Euro form with the pumped up TDI's.

Net to me, boulevard very tall wagon cruiser that is fine for U.S. speed with some twists at same US speeds, but it isn't up with the super or even better sports sedans at higher speeds--from having done it extensively with only a few thousand miles on the clock. Pick your choice of motor for acceleration, mileage, etc, but not so much handling near the limit. Needs both stiffer bars (also the same on a stock SQ vs Q) and somewhat struts probably, as well as a couple of inches down. Being clear too, from having driven it, in my estimation and experience the tires were not the limiting factor; it was the height, side wind buffeting and body roll. Wind noise was also low below maybe 100 but pronounced by about 115; roof bars were inside vehicle that they give you at the factory, not mounted on the roof.

Even w/ tweaks to suspension, pano. glass most of us with better equipped ones have and generally tall roof for all move COG up meaningfully--even if you get it down to typical Euro sport sedan height. I see yours is sans pano, but it still has the tall roof and one built more to car standards and strength (a good thing safety wise). Same basic analysis for most car based SUV's that are built to truck ride height standards to evade tighter EPA gas mileage standards on cars. The truly fast Autobahn burners we saw over extended distances in the unlimited zones were almost always sedans, hard tops/coupes or the occasional high end Porsche, R8, etc. We were typically the fastest SUV style vehicle we saw--maybe with one Q7 keeping up and one X6 styling disaster that went by at one point.

Spijun, I understand the governed speed differences--except maybe the 2.OT that may not get to the typical lower bound 230kph/130mph speed? Another poster had a 3.0T BTW (also 230/130 at least for USA models), but he said his was chipped. But that is not the point here; the discussion is around practical handling, cornering and cross wind parameters and limits regardless of governed or maximum possible theoretical speeds.

    Thanks for the detailed breakdown.

As I thought, there is no difference between the stock U.S. Q5 and SQ5 chassis, except for the optional 21" wheels. So, a 3.0T Q5 has the same chassis as a SQ5 3.0T in the U.S. Market.

I don't see why so many posters in the U.S. with SQ5s act like SQ5s have a completely different sport tuned chassis. It is amazing the amount of misinformation some people spew to act superior for choosing an S model.

We all drive the same car(essentially), no need to argue!!

Even with OEM crossbars installed my q5 drives great at proper autobahn speeds. And when completely stock it cruised just fine at 130

Not that this necessarily make a difference but the NA SQ5 has different springs and shocks than the Q5.

I think the Q5 has a lower top speed governor simply because it is fitted with more confortable (or what other qualitatives) H speed rated tires. Regarding S line Q5, they didn't bother increasing the top speed.

My SQ with the HR springs feels much more planted than my old A7 with sport pkg and 20's..

Here's proof: I was driving home with my wife in the car on the highway, and my wife was talking to her mom... There was no traffic or cops and a nice clear straightaway, so I dropped it down to 6th and slowly (1/3 throttle) accelerated to 120mph... When she got off the phone I said look... 120mph and you don't even feel it! She said Holy shit SLOW DOWN lmao... She had no idea...

The Q5 and Sq are both GREAT car... Can't wait to see what Audis cooking up for next generation!

I know yours is still brand new, but get that bad boy tuned whenever you feel comfortable. 50% more power with just stage 1! Its unreal how much Audi detuned our car, now I giggle every time i hit the throttle.

fastest for me down one of the main roads by my house going around 125 + mph with stage 2 revo, but as of today I'm in the process of getting a Unitronic K04 stage 2+ installed. Should be picking it up in a couple days. Can't wait to test her out.

Vagcom mods: LED DRL's on with turn signal, turn off amber side markers, front log lights stay on with High-beams, fog light turns on with turn signal, adjust LED brightness, operating windows and sunroof with remote, remove seatbelt chime, enabling gauge test/needle sweep

I haven't tuned yet because I don't want a warranty flag and I don't have the equipment/know-how to reset back to factory specs before taking it in for service.

I hit 125.83 in a 1/2 Mile race at SHIFT S3CTOR Airstrip Attack event in CA last weekend. Really fun event and lots of crazy cars going 200+MPH. I got killed by this GT500 but I ain't mad.

Yep. Although I was driving behind a Shelby GT500 on a parkway a few weeks ago... switched lanes to get off on my exit (but was right beside him).. and he tookoff just about as fast as KG's video. lol

    But Audi's are still nicer

I ended up next to him in line.. I just wanted to see what the Q5 could do down the 1/2 mile.

Agreed! I was disappointed in the showing of Audi's at this event. There was one RS7 that was blowing people away and a stock B5 or B6 RS6 also that was pretty quick and that was it. There were some R8's at the event but they weren't running them.

Nope. The tuned maps are still loaded on the ECU. Must be flashed back at GIAC/APR dealer.
