1996 Audi A4 quattro CXW manual transmission

I have a 1996 Audi A4 Quattro, 2.8L V6, manual 5-speed CXW transmission that was making rattling sound while in neutral. Once the clutch is depressed, the noise get a little quieter. However, I can not get into 5th gear.

Upon removal of the transmission I found out this. I guess I am missing teeth on couple of gears. Anyone has these gears from rebuilt leftovers? Thanks. I assume they are damaged 5th gears? https://www.dropbox.com/s/paa2nqo4td...gears.jpg?dl=0

That's mangled. Definitely going to have to find a new gear.

It's currently at 335,000 miles so it got a good use out of the transmission. Anyone know if what years A4 B5 that the transmission(s) will fit? Is it only 2.8LV6 or will some 1.8T work as well?

All B5 transmissions will bolt up. Find a 2.8 trans as 1.8 ones will have shorter gearing = less hwy mileage

Have to maintain it to get to that mileage. Things that have been changed:
    1) Alternator - got a used one at a junkyard at ~200k miles
    2) Power steering - got a used one at a junkyard at ~180K miles and flushed with CHF11S fluid
    3) Lifetime brake pad changes from Autozone since first change
    4) Starter - got a new lifetime one on E-Bay at ~245K miles
    5) Clutch changed at ~305K miles
    6) Wheel bearings changed on all four corners twice
    7) Front outer CV boot changed 3 times on both fronts
    8) Front suspension control arms changed once(all 8) with some upper control arms changed twice
    9) Outer tie rod ends changed twice (use Meyle brand, much larger and stiffer)
    10) Transmission fluid (Redline MTL) and rear differential fluid(Mobil 1 75W90) changed twice
    11) Spark plugs changed 3 times
    12) Timing belt, water pump, idler, and tensioner and serpentine belt changed twice
    13) Driver side rear caliper changed once
    14) Passenger side rear control arm changed once
    15) Driver side catalytic converter changed once
    16) Exhaust flex pipe changed twice
    17) Tires changed many times
    18) Oil and filter changed every ~5K miles with dino oil not synthetic
    19) AC compressor changed twice

I may have forgot some things :-)

God Damn. Quite the kept 96 you have. Surely the clutch had been changed more than once before 305k?

    Everything graciously mispelled by Android

Actually, I replaced the clutch at ~285k miles. There was no slipping until I had initial issues with the fifth gear so I took the transmission out to replace the clutch and then about a year later, the fifth gear started to self-destroy.

When I removed the clutch, it was clearly well worn but I didn't have any indication of slipping.
