    RS5 Maintenance

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi,

I recently have been looking into getting an RS5 or an S5 and I'm not sure which one to choose.
    CPO 2013 RS5 or CPO 2013-2014 S5.

I have heard from the dealers that the RS5 need to replace their brake rotors and pads every 15,000 - 25,000 miles. I know the RS rotors are kinda expensive going for 900 for a set.

Are there any other things I should be worried about on the car besides the rotors and stuff like that?

    Thank You

900 a set is wrong I believe. A full brake job with OEM parts is $2300.

Also watch out for the s tronic maintenance -- it's expensive. Tires will be more too since it is rolling 20's. Otherwise, it's pretty par for the course.

Audi Care resolves the DSG maintenance but doesn't cover brakes.

You can check tire prices on Tire Rack. From my research brakes and tires are quite a bit more on an RS than an S, consistent with post above, and neither seem to last as long on the RS.

Audi Care covers the majority of the maintenance. The DSG in the RS5 requires more maintenance than the DSG in the S5, so Audi Care is worth it on the RS5. Other than that, it's brakes and tires. 15k to 25k miles for the front brakes is about right. Mine lasted 24k miles and I replaced it with aftermarket ECS rotors and Hawk Pads. The rears were done 3k miles later, so full brake job every ~25k miles is about what you are looking at and even with aftermarket parts and doing it at an indy shop will run you a little over $2000. Tires, at least the OEM P Zero's last about 14k miles with my driving style, so I've been needing new tires about once a year. I do drive fairly spirited and am an avid canyon carver.

For comparison I just paid $360 for a complete set of ECS Drilled and Slotted Rotors and $180 for a set of Hawk Ceramic pads for my S5. I have 33k miles and had atleast 30% on my pads and a while to go on my rotors (I warped one during autocross). That being said if you can swallow the extra costs..... Rs5 is a no brainer. You can't compare them when it comes to drive and feeling

35k is the first DSG maintenance interval for the RS5 - I believe the S5/4 dsg allows for a greater interval between servicing.

My front brakes lasted 35k. I bought oem rotors and pads from ecs and changed them my self - front pad and rotor replacements are so easy.

My rear pads and rotors can probably make it to 50k or so. The caliper in the rear is pretty much the same as the S5 and the weight of both cars is more or less equal so other than slightly different pad compounds and rotor styles the service interval of rear brakes should be the same for both cars.

The RS takes a few more qts of oil so if you are penny pinching that is a slight difference

the tire replacement depends mostly on which tire you have... so that is a variable cost between the two. 19's, to 20's make little difference in wear so disregard that comment above. just buy Pilot Super Sports and get the 30k mile tread life warranty and call it a day...

Also, the first DSG maintenance on the RS is 15k http://www.audiusa.com/content/dam/a...-Year-2014.pdf

What does AudiCare run for an RS5? Other than the DSG service I expect to do all the rest myself as I don't really want to drive 800 miles round trip for an oil change for example. In the maintenance sheet it says drain fluids and filter for the DSG is there anything else involved as this doesn't seem like rocket science...

you may need to open up a shop in your parts. Sounds like the market is wide open for a local place.

My understanding is that PSS are not available in RS-5 OEM sized 20s and therefore would likely require more frequent replacement than on an S model for which PSS is available. Is that not the case?

Mr. Spectacular, well necessity is the mother of all inventions :)

7 years ago when I got the first Touareg and then a couple of years later when I got the second one I boasted 50% of all Touaregs in Fairbanks. When VW pulled out of here and went to Anchorage I had the nightmare of having to deal with a bunch of incompetents 400 miles away plus a 3 month battle with VWNA until they finally did not only what I said but their own manual stated (problem with a shrinking intake manifold in extreme cold which used to bind the variable intake motors).

After that (and the end of the warranty) and many many other mishaps where at one point the service manager told me in front of witnesses "those of you not living close to a dealer shouldn't buy VWs" I never set foot at a dealer. Trust me that made headlines around VW.

In any case I do not trust any dealer, not because they may or may not be inherently honest, but simply that for low volume cars such as the Touaregs and the RS5s, there's very little knowledge as reflected in the forums with over 65,000 members worldwide and the pain folks go through. Forums such as this one are invaluable help. I've invested tons of money on tools, am building a new garage for the RS5 and will do tackle most jobs not having to do with electronics myself. Been working on cars and racing since my 68 Roadrunner days (man I still miss that car).

As for opening a shop, I doubt I'll see many RS5s but there's recently been a slew of Audi sightings (mostly TTs for some reason). When I met with the Kendall SM here (Kendall took over from the wonderful folks mentioned above) he did say for minor warranty stuff they would be willing to talk to their Anchorage office and see if they could do the work and cross charge and save me the 800 mile round trip.

As to brake cost mentioned above, yep sounds about right. When I did the V6s and swapped out OEM the pads for KVR carbon fiber with kevlar and Zimmie rotors I had about 900 bucks or so in parts. Labor was my own (about 2.5 hours - well with a smoke break etc). So 2 grand seems about what they would charge with labor for OEM brakes.

A lot of the stuff you can do yourself if you have a good mechanic background, THINK the problem through, use a VAG-COM and a ton of cash invested in tools. But for the most part it isn't rocket science or defying the laws of physics though it's mostly over-engineered.

If you have the budget to buy either then don't worry about the difference in maintenance and get the RS. I'm not convinced it's very different and will likely depend more on driving style and bad luck. PM me if you want to drop by, I'm in Irvine.

Audi platinum protection covers..only pads though. I changed mine at 15K but rotors were good so only pads.

Otherwise like ttsgrl said OEM rotors+pads+labor is approx $2500 just for the fronts, but you can always curve towards aftermarket..

No other things you should be worried though..so far for me the car is reliable. Just make sure you rev it regularly
