So, having done a little modification project work in the past I thought I'd extend the wing of my SQ5 as I feel it could use a little more length..
First - buy yourself a secondhand wing off Ebay, don't go wrecking your OEM wing - they're expensive new!! Make sure the brake light still works.
Here is the start of the project. I'll update as I get further along.
So I can maintain a consistant & straight edge to my wing and because I want to retain the essential design, just extending an inch or so, I will jsut be cutting out the edge and refitting.
First mark up want you want to cut and decide on the length of your extension. I'm only going for 1.25" as I don't want to get carried away to start with. Maybe I'll go bigger on part 2..
Be vary careful about what and where to cut as you'll want to protect that straight edge.
Next use a dremell or similar power tool to make a fine cut along the line ensuring you 'jig' out the back edge but also using square teeth so you have something to fasten back to the main wing.
Make sure both sides are identical
Next you want to use some body filler just to position the edges in their new location. Make sure you use a lot of hardener so it sets quickly. You'll need to brace or hold the edge in position ensuring that all edges are straight. I used a straight edge to ensure the edge followed the contour of the wing so that the airflow over the wing would be true to the original design. Don't over lift or drop or you'll be adding downforce or lift to the car which you probably won't want.
I then glued wire to add strength but you won't need to do this. I will be adding a core of fibre reinforced plastic to add rigidity but I'll show you that later. For now just run a strip of packing tape along the back edge so that you can fill the gaps along the top and sand. Fill and sand, fill and sand until smooth. Then do the other side the same..
When you are filling, it's very important that you smooth off maintaining the contour of the wing. Use something like a packet of ice-lollie sticks and draw them across the fillerso that you can maintain the contour, then sand it smooth.
So far so good...
