VR6 Longitudinal SWAP - My Best practices

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi there,

I just finished 24V 2.8 swap into my B5. Hope this would help other in similar projects.
I am also located in EU, so all parts in stock if you heading to swap (Engine mounts, VR5 parts, custom intakes, oil pans) - just let me know

    Spec. (NA):

    MODEL: A4 B5

    Engine: VR6 2.8 24V BDE
    Intake manifold: Custom, Aluminium
    Exhaust: Stock, no cat.
    Injection: Stock
Computer: Standalone, Engine Management Unit (EMU)
    Drivetrain: S4 + clutch/adapter VR5
    Suspension: Stock S4 B4
    BODY KIT: S4 Lift
    Brakes: Porsche cayenne + 911. 345mm brake disks (S4 B6)
    Wheels - S4 B6 AVUS III, 235/40/18:

1 st thing is to modify engine bar, to be fitting with phaeton 3.2 (or modified touareg) oil pan:

Engine mounts - custome made, my own project. Something based on 034 unit, but without front reinforcement. Gearbox on oryginal mounts.
I did not use polyurethane engine cushion, but OEM Opel Omega 2.5 turbo diesel  Currently, no vibration inside car.

To link 01E gearbox and vr6 engine, you have to use VR5 adapter plate - plug&play:

Clutch - VR5 works perfectly, but only with low torque :/ Later you have to use double plate A5 3.0 TDI with special distance adapter:

Oil Pan - basically, the only longitudinal VR engines were mounted in Cayenne, Touareg and VW Phaeton, but first two of those are too high and require customization:

VW phaeton 3.2 is so fu*kin hard to get in EU (ofc used one - New cost around 800$):

    Valve cover - use A3 3.2 if you don't like mods ;)

Front panel - hood mount goes to hell (require external locks), as well cooler fans (but aircondition fan from S4 is far enough):

Exhaust manifold - depend on engine (12V or 24) you can buy ready made T3 or T4 with turbo input:

ECU - I strongly recommend standalone Engine Management Unit ECU + bluetooth connection to your mobile device

    And the results :)

Go ahead to share your comments - I also dont know everthing :)
If you need some more info/parts/drawings (not only to swap) - dont hesitate do PM me.

I messed up a little :) Now oil pan is on normal level, as there is VW phaeton inside. The worst case is when you have Touareg/Cayenne and it need to be customized :

yeah, turbo is on its way. I think, well done Garrett GT35 would be most reasonable - car need to be used for daily ride. I would be happy from ~450 HP.

From my perspective, doing "stage by stage" swap is safer and you can avoid all of the issues.

Dude no freaking way! Screw the VR6 swap. I wonder how the S4 tranny would holdup under the abuse. Note to self......gotta get another S4 for R&D. Any vids of the V10 going down the track?

Given how robust they've been to this point, I don't see it being an issue. I'd be worrying about things like diffs, axles etc before I'd worry about the trans.

Is has become a very viable swap.

http://www.INAENGINEERING.COM has OEM Engine brackets that allow for direct bolt up.

So many OEM components are available today as opposed to years ago.

    OEM Swap Parts listed below....

    Engine brackets
    Starter
    Trans adapter
    Oil pan
OEM Engine management is now possible for the VR in the B5 S4 :)

Lots of new options, this swap wont be possible for anyone unless they stop spending time finding obstacles rather than finding solutions.

I mean no disrespect, but why swap out a 2.7 for the VR6? I looked into it myself and they have to be built to make anything more than a 2.7. And with the 2.7 you just need rods for massive power. The only thing I can think of is more room to work on the sides.

Damn, my buddy's stock 12v made way more power than and stock rod 2.7t. Might want to rethink bc Stock block VR's have seen 9 second passes on fwd cars.

All the info I've seen when I was looking into it indicated you were good to 425-450whp without touching the engine and 500+/- whp with a spacer to drop c.r. That is reliably in a street car, from what I've seen.

Correct, those would make a more reliable DD. Also have seen a head spacer make a higg 9 second run. VR6T are an amazing motor. Before beefing up the bottom end and going BT, his 60 trim would spool like a k03 car and make 400 whp with ease (ran out of fuel/inj).

Now he runs a 6466 and makes over 700whp with more to go.

How responsive are the VR6ts in normal driving at those power levels? One thing I like about the 2.7 is it has really nice response down low.

True but remember even with the 2.7 when getting to higher numbers response does start to go down as well. Maybe less since two smaller turbos but still goes down. One reason. I wanna do this when I have money lol is because at high power maintaining a 2.7t becomes a full time job haha

    2.8 177/174
    3.2 250/?
    3.6 280/260

    Those are n/a numbers.

Edit: my buddy's 12v 6466 made 674/569 @ 28psi. Jumping over 100 whp from 24 to 28psi. Each gear runs different boost levels but is over 34psi now in 3-5. Nothing like doing a 60mph rolling anti-lag and laying over 100 yards of rubber.

A 60 trim on his 12v felt like a k04 spool. It was at full boost by 3k and would die quick (6500). Cams make the car very responsive.

I know a 12v NA car making just over 300whp on just cams. They are tq monsters. The VR6 is far more superior than the 2.7.

Remember, USP 24V vr6 is no coincidence. They didn't pull the 2.7 out for no reason.
