    MrNiceGuys Build Thread-D3 A8 SWB-S8 goodies-bags-wheels-ect...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
What's up guys, I know this build won't be everyone's cup of tea but feel like I should document what I'm up to over here. As far as I can tell there isn't much for build threads on D3's, especially when it comes to swapping out the air suspension and tight wheel fitment. Hopefully this will help some folks out in the future, I know I would have loved to see some others ideas when I was getting started.

Here's a brief history on myself since I am new to this section and haven't had a chance to meet anyone yet.
I've been a VW/Audi fanatic for many years and have owned and modified everything from Golfs to Q7's. My most recent project was a B6 S4 which was the car that got me active on this forum and is the car that I decided to part ways with to finance this project. It was a great car and I had a lot of fun showing and driving it but with two car seats now in my backseat it just wasn't getting much attention given I couldn't fit my whole family in it.
Pics of S4 shortly before it was sold.

So I sold the S4 to a good friend and focused my attention on the D3 A8L I had been using as my daily. Purchased and eLevel setup and custom built Bilstien/UAS air strut combo with every intention of starting a build on the A8L I had in hand. However once I really sat down and put all of my plans down on paper it just wasn't making much sense to invest so much money into a car that I honestly wasn't really exited about in the first place. Parts and bodywork are insanely priced on A8's as most of you know and the car I had needed a shit ton of both, plus I wanted a short wheelbase model with lower miles and the baseball glove interior. Once again my car was listed in the classifieds and the hunt for the right D3 began.

Said A8L, sold on lowering links and eBay wheels to aid in a quick sale.

Well the timing couldn't have been better and just as I was finishing up the sale of my current car a unicorn of D3's popped up on one of my daily Cars.com searches. An 07 A8 S-line, prior to finding this car I didn't even know the S-line had been an option in the states. The car was exactly what I was looking for, emaculate black paint, low miles, awesome Carfax, peanut butter interior, and all the S8 goodies that were driving up the price of modding a standard A8. I cleared my weekend and made the 500 mile trip to northern Tennessee smack dab in the middle of a blizzard. Made the trip in about 10 hours and to my delight the car was everything the seller had said it was and more. S8 bumpers, mirrors, grill, OEM LED tails, RS6?wheels, and 3 spoke wheel with paddles are some of the more notable features. Bought the car on the spot and drove home the next day, the weather had cleared up decently and made it home in just under 7 hours.

Here's a few pics of the car and of the journey. I don't get out much so driving through the mountains on the way home was a blast for me.

And back home safe and sound

Well that was a much longer intro than I had planned but if your still with me onto the beginning of the build.
Here's what I have planned for starters and just gonna see where it goes from here.
I should have mentioned that I sourced a set of my dream wheels out of France back in the fall. 20 inch OZ Futura's, specs are a little weak and wrong bolt pattern but that is being addressed as we speak.

Step one is getting the wheels refinished and redrilled. They are currently at APT9 wheels being relipped, fully polished, trued, and redrilled. The final specs will be somewhere near 20x10.5 +20 front +13 rear, polished lips and faces with black barrels. I should be getting these back anytime now!

Step two is get my trunk setup built and functional then take a long weekend off of work and try and get the bags and sensors installed in one long weekend. This is my daily so I don't have the luxury of just ripping it apart and hanging parts at my leisure.
Half of this plan is near complete, I have most of the trunk setup built, plumbed and wired. I need to make a trip to the hardware store for a few odds and ends and find a nice looking gauge to mount on my tank but aside from those little things I'm just about good to go.
Wiring everything is easy enough but routing all the wires cleanly is proving to be a little difficult, I'm betting this will be my next little holdup as even though everything will be mostly out of site, I'm really trying to keep it clean looking.

Step three is going to be source and install either an R8 or RS6 steering wheel, I'm yet to find anything I like at the right price so time will tell with this one.

Pics of wheels before I sent them out

Trunk setup from beginning to present

And the soon to be installed struts.

That's all I have for now and I do realize this isn't much of a build at the moment but things should start getting interesting in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for looking.

One more shot of the struts before they go on. For anyone who is in the market Universal Air is the only place you can source custom Airstruts with plug and play pre manufactured top hats.

Got a little more work done this weekend.
Trunk setup is complete and bench tested. Ran it all the way up to 200 psi and no leaks!

Punched the holes and installed my bulkheads, they fit great just on either side of the rear struts and the wires for the eLevel will be ran right through the existing grommet.
Another benefit of running them in this location is I will be able to run a leader line from the bulkhead directly into the rear bag and take a couple fittings out of the equation.

I've always got plans for the car, then I run up how much my plans cost, and plans quickly change.

Thanks guys, I'm getting pretty pumped up myself.

The wheels on the L were Niche Vicensa's (20x10.5 +27) Heavy as hell but held up well through the winter and all.
I can't remember the seller but someone on Ebay was listing these "best offer" and I got a hell of deal, can't remember exactly how much either but I think it was well under $1k shipped.

Got a little more done today.
My only gripe with installing this eLevel so far is that the four wires for the height sensors have enormous connectors on each end of the harnesses. Unless you feel like cutting holes big enough to pass the connectors through the car you have to cut all the connectors off, route the wires through a hole just big enough for the wire, then solder the wires back together.
Kind of a pain but I got them all routed and passed right through the large grommets beside the rear struts.

    Said connector

    Wires passing through grommet

And all tucked away in the factory channel

Got the last little pieces I was waiting on today. I'm planning on taking Friday off work and getting this sh*t started.

These are pretty cool, height sensor mounting brackets from #becausebags. Suppose to make the tedious job of installing the height sensors a piece of cake.

    how is the install going??

the e-level sensor plugs de-pin very easily, you just need to make yourself a good schematic of the plug so it goes back together properly.

^^^ The bags are on! I've been waiting until I had time to do a good write up on the install before just dumping a few pics but what the hell.

I will write up an actual build thread as soon as I have some spare time. Work, kids, and tinkering with the car have me running on borrowed time at the moment.
The bags went on great, sensors were a bit of a trick at first but fairly simple once I got the hang of them.

    Coming real soon

The bags are controlled with either a hard wired touchpad that is stashed under my armrest or wirelessly via the iLevel app and my iPhone.

    Mr. NiceGuy,

Crazy, but that was my A8 that I purchased pre-owned in Miami. It began as a standard A8 that I had done some modifications to. I purchased S8 mirrors, and S8 front and rear bumpers and double tips that I had welded onto the standard Dual exhaust. I also installed An S8 grille and put on the S-line emblems. All of the work was done at Champion Motorsport in Pompano Beach, FL. I also had the calipers powder coated a dark red and had Audi symbols placed on them. I did lower it via Vag-Com and turned off the seat belt chime as well. I had the taillights smoked, and used Lumar ceramic tint for the windows and had the front bumper markers painted bodycolor along with the front section where the plate would go in the grill. The RS6 type wheels were standard on that car as it was a short wheelbase, which are rare birds.

I ended up trading it in to a dealer to buy a D3 S8 a few years ago in South Florida which has also since been traded in.

I am so glad that it went to a good home!!

BTW, I have those HRE wheels that are in the pics still in the garage and are available for sale if anyone is interested. I have detailed pics in my photo gallery. sorry for the plug.

Your car looks so sweet, looking forward to watching the build!

Nischair, that is amazing! Even though the seller was adamant that this was an original S-line car I always suspected it was built this way by someone. I can't even imagine the amount of time and money that went into the "conversion"
Thanks for chiming in man, it's great to know the actual history of the car!
You should just give me those HRE's for nostalgia reasons...

    MrNiceGuy,

Yeah, it was a labor of love and in the end I realized I had gotten too caught up in trying to convert it into an S8, so I decided to draw a line and make the jump. The time and money was worth it though, I enjoyed every minute of it.
Would love to pass down the HRE's for nostalgia, lol but I'm hoping to use them to help fund my constant car modification budget!!

    Good luck with the build!!

Don't know much about Phaetons man, I'd assume most suspension components are the same as D3's but can't say for sure. Maybe take a few pics with the wheels off and post them up for comparison.

Works are mounted now, still waiting on the OZ's.

Untinted my tails over the weekend. They didn't look bad I'm just a fan of the red contrasting the black.
Took about an hour each piece. I stipped, sanded, buffed, polished, and sealed each one. A lot of work but really happy with the end result, better pics coming once the weather clears and I can wash my car.

Working my way through, don't know what this stuff was but it seriously didn't want to come off.

    Thanks man!
I really wish I could fit some more rubber under the front myself. By my math however if I run them at 48 psi then that at least gets me up aound 100 or so on the load rating. Next season I'm planning on bigger barrels so I'm able to stretch and fit some 255's all aound.

I read this thread from top to bottom and lucky for me there was no waiting to see any of the turn out. This is great work. I am new to the A8 game and would like to bag mine. But I cant find a kit. I looked on the universal air site you said but couldn't find what you had used. Would be able to help me out? I have big dreams and cant find a place to start. Anything is appreciated.

Just call UAS and ask for Zack Ratcliff, I've referred several people to him lately and he has taken great care of everyone as far as I know.
