B7 Raceland Coil overs? No discussion ever.....why?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I remember seeing a lot on these Raceland coil overs in the B5/ B6 forums, but nothing in the B7 forums! Is there a reason...are they so/so or garbage? Other budget coils like ST beat them?

$369 is less than I paid for some new Bilstein sports.

They seem extremely cheap. I don't know ALOT about coils. But from what I've heard you need to drop 1,000$ bucks if you want a quality set. I wouldn't put a 300$ set on my audi

I don't know that ST beats them.. Don't they run like 800$? The budget set I've seen around are the Solos at $500.

I wonder if there are reviews out there for those on the B7; price doesn't ALWAYS mean quality.

I don't know anyone that has a set on a b7, my buddy has a set on his rabbit. I drove it once, it seemed to handle alright. I think it really comes down to what you want to do with the car, my b7 will never see any type of motorsport use, it is strictly a daily driver. I just wanted a decent ride, and to get rid of the wheel gap. I had H&R coils on it, I blew a front strut, I switched to ST's, and I like them better than I ever liked the H&R's, at least on this car. I have a set of H&R coils on my jetta that are great. If you are considering coils, pm Chris@fifteen52. I got my ST's from him. With the shipping on the racelands the prices are not so far apart, certainly close enough to be worth looking into.

You get what you pay for. ST's are a much better value.

ST are made by KW. For the price do we really need to bring any other brand into the picture?

Raceland are good for getting you to sit low . The ride quality is less then what I prefer . A guy @ the shop has them on his B7. He didnt care about the ride quality as much as sitting low

Good to know. I bought a set of front and back Bilstein sports brand new off CL...now I am wondering if I should be going the ST Coil route or get some springs that will drop my car just a touch 1/2" more than I'd get if I reinstalled the stock sport springs. I've asked around but haven't gotten much for answers as to which ones would be just slightly lower than my stock sport springs. I don't want the car slammed as I need some room for snow as I spend 40+ days a year in the Mtns....of course it doesn't snow any more here in Ca so I'm not sure what I'm worried about.

Usually when you look at springs they will tell you what the approximate drop will be.

on the 240sx forums, enthusiasts dont want racelands anywhere near their car.
so i deffantely woulnt consider slapping those on an a4. good quality coilovers arent cheap. $360 for a set?....back away slowly and dont make any sudden movements

$360 and that's after the manufacturer and distributor have both made a buck. So just think about the quality you get for around $200 worth of coilovers. ;)

You guys can talk all you want. I have a set and I love them. I'm at 24.5 ftg and it rides great and handles far better than stock. I can understand the mentality of getting what you pay for but I got these and I love them. People who are posting about how shitty these are... Do you have any first hand experience with them? Do you have any data that backs up accelerated wear? Bad handling? If not then maybe you should hold your tongue until you do.

Sure, yeah, but I don't have them in front of me. I probably just need to bust out and sell the Bilsteins and buy some ST's since they seem like they're getting a lot of love. Hopefully the ST's ride as nice and last as long as the Bilsteins I would have put on.

Fair statement, holding one's tongue. Now, to be fair from the other side... have you ridden in a car with ST coilovers? I've not been in an A4 with either, so I have no experience with either but I will say this... I used to roadrace motorcycles, and was fine with my upgraded rear shock... until I rode another bike just like mine that had an Ohlins.... and WOW. The Ohlins was FAR superior... but also cost a TON more.

You love your Raceland setup, and there's not a damn thing wrong with that... but if you're going to ask others what their experience is, then it's only fair that you provide your reference & experience. We know you have driven stock & now a Raceland setup; what else?

I totally hear where you're coming from and I'm sure that many coilovers setups that cost a lot more will ride more refined and may handle better.. My point is that they get a bad rep and I think a part of that is because they are so cheap. For the price, I couldn't be happier. I'm sure if I invested another grand I would feel a difference.. But they are NOT garbage. They are easily adjustable, they don't squeak, they don't bounce on the highway.. I'm just saying that they are a great setup compared to stock. I do understand where you're coming from though

Have you ever experienced a great quality coilover set?

The issue with most Raceland reviews is that the majority of people raving about them just wanted to be slammed for cheap, and have never actually owned a quality suspension system like a Bilstein, KW, H&R, PSi, Ohlins, etc... So when they say they "ride great" and "handle amazingly", I take it with a grain of salt.

Ok. So I'm slammed for cheap, ride quality is as good as stock with maybe a tiny bit more harshness and car handles far better than stock. I'm happy with it. If you have the extra money for it, I'm in no way trying to discourage that because I'm sure that it could be better. I'm just saying, it's not garbage. Not by a long shot.

Anyways I just ordered an 034 rear sway and I cant wait to see how that adds to the suspension upgrades.

Everything is relative. That said, I'm glad to hear you're happy with it and that you don't feel it rides any worse than stock.

Yeah man, I can't wait! The under steer seems to an Audi constant so hopefully this alleviates it. At least to some degree.. Anyways, op not trying to thread jack. Just excited! I'm gonna be posting a video of the new custom exhaust setup I had done as well as a review of the 034 sway bar once I wrestle it on there. Good luck in your decision with the coils. I love mine but I'm sure there are better options.

I went from St coils to Street Edge because they started to leak. and feel no difference paid $800 for st. paid $350 for street edge. feels the same.. so price isn't always bad quality.

I think it's also about how long the shocks last. I don't expect my ST shocks to last that much, my racelands lasted me a year. The rear springs suck on both setups. I cant go lower than 24 with them without rubbing on stock rims over bumps. I also wouldn't trust a vendors input considering all he sells are ST coilovers here. And he sells for all cars and setups.

He sells more than st's. How ever they are I believe the cheapest he has and when people go from race land or solo werks the tend to step up to st, which from that and people skipping the cheaper and buying the st results in what he sells the most of.

And I run STs on my B7 Avant. I have about 30k miles on my STs and 230k on my avant and I have put 220k miles on the car myself. I sell them, I use them and I like them. I also sell Solowerks and KW, B&G, BCs, etc and I chose ST for my needs. A perfect every day daily coil over that has a 5 year warranty and I can expect to last a long time.

That is where the 5 year warranty comes in handy. I have friends I sold the STs to that have been running them for 5+ years.

That's a bummer, unfortunately a failure every here and there is unavoidable. KW as a whole has great reliability though.

Why didn't you have them replaced under warranty?

You coulda just put your old shocks back on temporary. You stated you sold them on CL when another member asked about them. So either you sold the shocks blown or you had to send them back to ST anyway for warranty to sell a new set. The CL buyer couldnt do it because its only good for the original owner.

Only one shock was blown the other 3 were the ones i sold. Got good feedback from the guy after he installed never heard back from him meanwhile i was running in stock height and it was crazzy seeing a gap again.

Sorry for reviving this thread, but any updates with people who have them for more than 20k miles? Not looking for thoughts about them but actual experience. JOM seem to be an alright brand for BMW owners. Both right around the same price range. Let me here opinions of people who have actually had either of them.
