    Center cap install...FAIL?!?! Advice needed

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
After researching the forum, I purchased these center caps for my VMR v710 wheels:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/291408157680

Went to install them last night (The wheels are not on the car yet as this winter will not end in PA), pulled the retention ring off the cap and pushed into the wheel. Almost every plastic tab on the cap broke. Out of four caps, I managed to have two stay on with only one broken tab. The other two are unusable because every tab has broken off.

The Caps fit, it just seems like the tabs are junk - Anyone else have this experience? Are these caps just duds?

    Thanks

Center caps come in different sizes. If the tabs are breaking sounds like they're too big.

I thought the same - But according to VMR and the research, these are the correct outside and inside diameter. When they are in, the fit is perfect. The tabs fit flush inside the wheel. Seems like they are just junk.

Why would you do that for? The retention ring has to stay with the cap all the time or you'll break all the tabs. I got the same cheap caps last year I have no problems with putting them on or off when needed without any issues. I believe OEM ones have exactly the same design.

Really? Thanks! I read a few other threads while searching the forum where the advice was to pull the retention ring off when installing.

So you kept the ring on and just pushed the caps in by hand?

Just add a little emblem glue to them. 3 dots of glue on each center cap will hold them on without issues. I wanted an oem cap on my aftermarket wheels and the cap fitted nicely on the outside (what we see) but was way too loose in the inside.

Here's a pic for reference. Excuse the tape measure lol.. Only pic I have on this phone as a close up to my wheel.

Your welcome, I just had my front tires balanced and a little nudge on the inside, they came right out. I actually just glued them back on just now lol.

On a side note, what a difference driving with my tires balanced! No more steering wheel shaking when driving or breaking that I experienced when i installed my summer set a couple weeks ago.

Yep, never had to use anything else to keep them in place.

Looking carefully at sellers pics of backside of center caps on web link, what you purchased are NOT OEM Audi center caps, they are aftermarket replacements - why you are having problem you've described with tabs breaking off.
    1. Retention Ring in seller's pic is spread out too much, ring appears to be non-OEM material, likely not tensioned properly - as a result tabs were previously stressed, causing them to break when you installed them, even w/o retention ring in place.
    2. Markings on seller's center caps have ONLY the p/n and not the Audi logo, country of origin [s/b Germany], time/date stamp, and material used [PPO/PA] - they're not OEM.
    3. Retention Ring must be removed b/f installing Center Caps on rims - then position retention ring b/f installing rim. Anyone claiming otherwise doesn't know what they are talking about.

I have purchased 3 sets of these used OEM Center Caps from an eBay seller in Oregon. They are on VMR V708, V710 and a spare set - never a problem.

    Cheers
