Audi A6 TDI ADBLUE DIY Refill How - To ??!!! Please Help!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just got the adblue message to top it off - and I swear I saw a post on here on how to do that DIY rather than taking into dealer. Does anybody have that info or can provide a link to it? Suggestions on where to purchase adblue? Searched all over for the DIY and cannot find it.

I did run across the fact that if you do it as long as the range is above 600 miles left you do not need to see dealer to clear the message - is that also correct?

    Thanks!!!

The adblue filler cap is in the trunk, beyond the spare tire. this DIY vid may help. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1h9hWlvg6sM

"Flaw: AdBlue Filler Cap - Nothing is more annoying than getting a low AdBlue message while on a road trip. Oh, wait, there is something more annoying. What could it be? Well, it's the fact that in order to remove the AdBlue filler cap, you must empty out your trunk, get access to the spare tire, remove the spare tire, then grab the lug wrench. Yup, we're not changing a tire but it sure as hell feels like it. You see, the lug wrench was designed as the fitting for the AdBlue filler cap. So while you're in the gas station unloading your possessions on the diesel laden ground, just keep in mind that this is simply a design flaw that can easily be corrected. Audi needs to change the AdBlue filler cap design so that I can simply twist it off by hand. It's completely unnecessary to perform acts 1 and 2 of the flat tire drama to simply loosen a cap. It's a horrible experience."

ECS tuning has the adblu with bottle and free shipping for 1.8L. You could always get this and I recommend going to a pilot or flying J truck stop and buying adblu or calling your local truck shops, I.e. freightliner, Volvo etc they usually have good prices since any truck operating in Cali has to have CA emissions

My 2014 A6 TDI DEF filler is next to the fuel cap as indicated in the photo posted above by tenspeed. (But, I think this picture is upside down)

Car is still dealer serviced, so I have not had to add any myself yet, but its a normal 6pt socket. (metric,17, or 19 mm not Torx, not triple Sq) its just like the lug bolts.

If I recall the manual said it has like a 4 or 5 gallon capacity.

It's not, think about the repercussions of 65+ mph wind would be on a fuel door left open if it hinged the other way. I think the adblue cap is just on the right side on the A6.

I have a '14 TDI and the fill port is right next to where you put fuel into the car - NOT in the trunk (at least on the '14 A6 TDI). I bought some from Europaparts about 6 months ago - one "small bottle with the fill nozzle, another 2.5 gallon jugs as well. While its a pain in the butt to keep refilling the small bottle, it sure beats the $200.00 or so "kit" for doing this. I simply bought a long funnel to reload the small bottle each time.

Ive been topping it up at 10k mile increments and it seems to take about 2.5 gallons at that mark. Interestingly Im close to 20k miles now so I tried the stealership to see what their price was - 2 2.5 gallon jugs for $18.00 (about HALF of what Europaparts was, and no shipping!).

whatever you do, get ONE small bottle as youll need it for the nozzle.

Great suggestions - thank you. So thats pretty much all there is to it, is just to keep topping it of about 10k or so miles? Yes I will check with dealer as well on their pricing. The '1500 mile adblue' message should go away as well on the dashboard without dealer intervention?

Is it recommended to use 'adblue' specifically or can it be any version/brand of diesel additive?

i.e. is this the same as adblue ?? http://www.amazon.com/BlueDEF-DEF002.../dp/B004O80QP8
