    How's my oil level

Is this normal for new car before first oil change? Here's the oil level at 8200 KM (about 5100 miles) 80% highway driven.

Mine gets to the middle or slightly lower at the time of the oil change (i change it around 10000km or 6000 miles). The car has 65000km or 40000 miles.

Mine looks like that after 700 miles (101k). If you bring it up at the dealer they will just claim its within spec. And typically engines burn a little bit of oil in the first 1000 miles as the rings seal

Anywhere between max and min is ok. When it gets near min it is time to start thinking about adding oil. Not sure if that's what you mean of it if you are asking how the display works mechanically / digitally.

I believe the oil level should be checked (obviously not on inclined road / driveway) when engine is up to operating temp (i.e. Not when cold) and if I recall the manual indicates consumption may be higher before first oil change.

The MMI checks the top liter of oil.

The vehicle needs to be at operating temperature and parked on a level surface, shut it off for 2 minutes. Read oil level on MMI.

After an oil change you need to drive a minimum of 500kms for the system to reset.

which is kind of counter intuitive because in a typical car with a dipstick or even an audi with the dipstick added, you will want to check oil on a car that has not been running, on a level surface, to get an accurate reading making sure all of the oil is in the crankcase when looking at the dipstick...

obviously you can check your oil a car that has been running ie at the gas station on the road etc, but the dipstick reading will be lower because the oil is distributed more evenly throughout the entire engine since it was running recently.

You can check the oil when it is hot or cold. As long as you give the hot oil some time to drain back into the pan. Usually hot oil will read a little higher due to expansion. Either way there should not be a great deal of difference.

I always was taught you check oil with a dipstick after the car has been cooled down. I usually check first thing in the morning before I start my car, doing it that way for 40 years

Couldn't agree with you more. My daddy taught me how to check the oil way before he would let me drive…It only got screwed up when the wizards started with the no dipstick crap..Obviously a money saving deal…S

BMW 3 series has it so the B6 Audis copy cat the idea. Thing is that with the BMW, you check the oil level while the car is running and there is no easy way to retrofit a diptick.

You would. Think the electronic system cost more, maybe audii thinks owners are morons and can't get hands dirty or can't be bothered unless it it electronic. Fortunely they left dip stick tube in place so you can buy and use a real dipstick. Probably would have caused major engineering change in manufacturing to eliminate tube, so they just capped it. Good for us old timer purist.

Due to customer reactions and the number of dipsticks sold Audi say the B9 will have one again. Time to wait and see I guess.

While we're on the subject of oil levels. 2 days ago while driving, the info screen in between the tach and speedometer displayed the oil level and said "Oil level is ok" or something along that line. I'd never seen that prompt before in my almost 3 years of ownership and 24k miles. I was cruising steadily at around 75 mph while commuting and had been at that speed probably for 30 minutes or longer when the message flashed. Is that displayed from time to time and I've just never noticed it? I check my oil regularly through the MMI and dipstick. Once I had the add oil message but I've never heard of one randomly telling me that the oil level is fine. Anyone else?

Exact same thing happened to me on my old B8 , it was a faulty hood latch.

Your right, you don't know or seem to understand...

The question is not what does okay mean...it's why does the message pop up on your DIS.

If you open your hood while the car is running it appears. If it appears when you are driving on a highway it could be a faulty hood latch like it was for me and a few others.

Thanks. I never saw that thread. I have my 25k service in a few weeks so I'll mention it at the time and will keep an eye on the display to see if it happens again on a bumpy road.
