    VAG KKL driver, need help!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
HELP! I have wasted probably 50+ hours f***ing around with this and can't get my VAG KKL cable drivers installed. I have both XP and Windows 7 running thru a virtual machine on my mac (VMware Fusion is the interface). The driver disc that came with the cable is a bulls*#@ miniCD which slot drive laptops can't read. Every time I go to plug the cable in and install drivers, the computer can't find any of the 50 thousand drivers I've attempted to download and use. I used to have no problem with my old ebay cable and VCDS lite, but since wiping my computer clean and reinstalling it, my previous cable was bricked by the monopolistic FTDI update and now I'm running into the same problem with my new cable.

I have no idea what to do, but it's making me want to set my car, computer, and cable on fire. Please help! I am inexperienced with PCs and simply want to run VCDS lite for code checking my extremely problematic B5 S4.

    Thanks

Uninstall whatever FTDI drivers you installed. Install the old FTDI driver, the last version before they sabotaged knockoff chips. I don't remember that version number offhand, but if you search you should be able to find my post with that info from some months ago. Then plug your cable in.

Thanks for the help. I uninstalled the driver on the cable (went to device manager, selected my USB2.0 cable which comes up when I plug in the blue VAG KKL cable), and tried to reinstall the CDM 2.04.06 driver, which is what another member on here sent me earlier this year (knowing I was going through this issue). This is the error message I keep getting:

Since the new FTDI drivers supposedly brick knockoff cables/chips, I'm weary of visiting the the FTDI website for the download. I am totally PC illiterate, so maybe I'm overlooking something very obvious here. Ideas?

    Thanks for the help.

yes make sure the driver you are using will work with the version of windows you have even though its a virtual machine im sure theres still a 32 and 64bit version of it.
also once you get it installed make sure its on a com port that vag com will see by going into the device manager and checking the com port of the device under device properties

Thanks! I'm going to find a 32 bit version of XP or Windows 7 (mine is 64 and I've read that more people have trouble with drivers on the 64 bit version) and give this a try. Much appreciated--I'll report back with success or roadblocks!

I feel like I'm not getting anywhere with this, but I'm not giving up yet! I found the 32 bit version of XP, downloaded it, and tried to install the CDM 2.04.06 driver. Same error code. Any ideas? Is there a download source for old (non bricking) drivers for the FTDI chip/blue VAG KKL cables?

    Ahh sorry to hear that!

I honestly can't clearly remember what I did to get it working again. I do remember buying a second blue cable--this might've been the solution to my problem. I think I blocked those car troubleshooting memories from my consciousness out of sheer frustration,

At least one of the cables I had was bricked from a Windows update. I recall running Ubuntu (I'm on a mac) and typing in some magic voodoo in a terminal/dos style program I found somewhere online, which unblocked the cable and either let me bypass the install of drivers, or install them and connect. I'm sorry, I'm not of much help.

I still have my Allroad and cable, and can look at it today. My computer has been wiped clean numerous times and no longer has a windows OS on it, but I did back up some files on an external HD. I'll look in there today to see if I saved any notes or driver files.
