Been a very long time since I frequented these parts, loved my 2004 S4 (back in the day) but once it started eating oil I ran. 10 years later, I'm gonna give Audi another chance...

    Awesome car. I was cross shopping the D4 A8, A7, and C7 A6 when buying my S8.

I've got about 3000 miles on the A8, 44k miles total. Still loving the car but having typical "audi" problems.

About 500 miles into my ownership the check engine light came on and the car was in the shop for almost 3 weeks. Eventually they replaced the evap pump to get the light to clear. While it was in the shop they also checked into my complaint about coolant loss and replaced a "rear engine seal" on one engine bank. These repairs were covered under warranty and they did give me a A6 loaner.

As to my complaints about brake vibration at 40-50mph, they told me the rotors were all warped and it would cost $1600 to replace them. I have attempted to get the selling dealer, who CPO'd the vehicle, to assist in the cost of the brake repair, but they have refused. Apparently only rotor thickness is guaranteed under the CPO, not rotor "trueness" -- frustrating. I am still debating if I should pursue this matter further with Audi of America.

In the meantime I am trying to figure out a more cost effective way to replace the rotors. I believe the fronts can by done by my local mechanic buddy, however the OEM front rotors are $250 each. The rears, it sounds like you need a VAGCOM to unlock the parking brake, if so I would probably need the dealer to do this. So maybe I could save $200-$300 -- I'm not sure it's worth it. Has anyone else replaced rotors on a D4 A8?

You should have someone near you that's handy with vagcom and is willing to help. Unless things have changed from previous Audis with electronic hand brake it's very simple to do.

One side note, rotors don't really warp, what most commonly causes a false 'warped rotor' diagnosis is uneven deposits of pad material. It might be worth a shot having the rotors turned (if you can find someone that still offers this service) if you're looking to minimize costs. A number of other things can cause the symptoms you mention, but this is most common. To help avoid it in the future adhere to proper brake bedding in practices. Most importantly not coming to a complete stop during the very initial period.

Good luck, hope you can get it sorted with little cost. A huge shame for such a nice car to have any kind of vibration.

I recommend you taking the car to Eurotech motorsports in Mahwah. Ask for Danek and they will diagnose and take care of you

I spoke w. Danek and he came in about $400 cheaper then the Audi dealer. He did state there was no way to turn or resurface the Audi rotors.

Nice car! Just entered the D4 realm myself having lived in the D3 realm with 2006, 2007, 2008. I love mine...it belonged to Kevin Durant before I got it. Right after buying it, took a 4k mile road trip with the family and loved it-family was fighting for the back seat (entertainment package) but I was happy to drive. Also CPO and had a ton of things to do when I got back ($7k) at the dealership but the car is awesome. A keeper for sure---just hit 59k and had the big maintenance done. I think this is my favorite A8L,,,,same color as yours. I usually like Black and Peanut butter interior but this will work. Bought it CPO, with the Audi wrap up to 120k. Life is good!

Finally got Audi to recognize that the rotors were not warped. They replaced both front upper control arm bushings and both front lower ball joints. Stability during break is 100x better now.

For those interested, I've had this vehicle into the Audi dealer at least 5 times in the past 13 months. Each time it required 2 to 3 days of work. The list of sensors, software and suspension/steering parts replaced is extensive. Two thumbs down from the dealer whom I purchased the vehicle and a very questionable certification checkout. Two thumbs up to my servicing dealer who has gone above and beyond to make everything right. After the 3rd visit they stopped charging me the CPO deductable, and although I've never gotten an A8 loaner, they've alway had a pretty nice A6 waiting for me. I was told the actual cost of the all the repairs required was over $5K. Car is driving like new right now but I definitely won't own it when the warranty runs out.
