i would pay a good shop to do it unless you have tools and skills. if you are above 80k miles you need to do it.

I just confirmed with aoa some engines got a revised part... So I'm sure there is something wrong with ours.

    Edit :

Also confirmed that audi don't call it "lifetime" and the service should be done at 110k miles.

When my stage 2 was done at 76k the tech found my tensioner "out of parallel" to the chain and replaced it free of charge.

My dealer also replaced mine along with the upper chain guide. Nothing wrong with mine, but the dealer is now replacing them as part of the stage 2 fix.

How much could one expect to pay for such a service? $1k at a decent shop?

You're probably in the right range. The part is only about $60 and I would guesstimate 6-8 hr's labour?

I just dumped the part numbers in the 2.0T Engine Tech forum (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ensioner-Study). Some part numbers might have been superseded by now.

Just going to leave this here... OEM chains are between 150~200+ USD and the valves don't need to be removed for a chain service.

I'll double-check, but I don't believe the maintenance manuals call for it being serviced at any specific interval. Side note: My water pump is showing calcification - time to get that changed out too. I'm at 97k miles on 2009 A4.

We do a few every month - not as many as the 4.2's though! I've seen a few fail, but they were all VW (GTI) engines if I'm remembering correctly.

    Found a link to Audi's 2009 maintenance guide: http://www.audiusa.com/content/dam/a...-Year-2009.pdf

In the notes at the bottom of the page, it mentions changing the timing chain on front-wheel drive 2.0L A4's at 110k miles. No mention of Quattro equipped A4's. ECS Tuning shows the same part numbers for the lower and upper chains for both Quattro and Front Track equipped cars.

That refers to a belt which it appears those models use, rather than a chain.

Thanks SDF1 for posting here and A4BGP for the post in the other section and parts list.

I'll probably do this come fall so I can use the storage unit to do the work over the course of the weekend before I store the MB for the winter.

That's what I found interesting. Maintenance guide references timing belt. However, I checked ECS Tuning for both Front Track and Quattro equipped A4's and each time it directs you to a set of timing chains. FWIW, my mechanic recommended getting it done at about 100k miles. He has already replaced 3 timing chain sets on 2009 A4's this year - 2 preemptively, 1 after it snapped. That car needed a valve job too $$$. I'll get mine done in the next month or so now that I'm at 97,500 miles. Water pump is on its way out too, so might as well just suck it up.

That reference is for the TT and Cabriolet models, not the A4. For mine(2011) it refers to the TTS and A3 TDI only.
I'm not debating the pros/cons of changing the chain, just clarifying the published maintenance schedule. It's up to you of course, if you wish to change the chain at some point.

There are no cons on changing the chain. The chain and tensionner have an updated part because they have issues.
If you own the car and you are getting any engine work done, i would do it without thinking. If it's a lease... then don't do it.

How many KM do you have on it and how long are you keeping the car?
By the way, you can call the dealer and with your VIN you can see if you have the updated chain and tensionner or not.

Had my tensioner (06k-109-467-K) replaced with my stage 2 consumption fix in July of 2014. I don't see the rail part that @oascom mentioned earlier, though.

They also apparently replaced the cam adjuster?

I wish I got a screen shot of my Carfax report, I remember a little blurp about the timing tensioner

Getting the tensioner changed. With labor and a few other parts it is 1000 at an Audi vw mechanic here in Toronto, I'm getting it done.
